. 1&JLL. Eu:.Ai~ AS TO SCWERAGE. When the petition was taken to the freeholders of the city requesting an election on the quesLia of voting $25,000 for the purpose of putting in a system of sewerage it was represented that this amount wonld be sufficient to sewer the entire city. That representation was made in good faith and based on a former survey and estimates which were made by men in position to know the cost of material. That esiimate did not include the Mollohon Mill, but it is necessary now to include that. It appears now from the survey made by the engineer that $25,000 will not cover the town. It is very important while we are at it to put in a system sufficient to cover the town, for it can be done at less cost now than later. The present survey for instance does not go out Johnstone street further than the residence of Mr. Jno. M. Kinard and there are a number of resi dents further out who are taking * 1 city water and are anxious to ha' the 2 sewer connection and who ar, ..ntitled 3 to have it. It would have been as asy to have b secured $40,000 in tie beginning as C $25,000, but it wp, thought that the c $25,000 was am;e and we did not want E to ask for mie than was needed. Mr. I Beddoes, jae engineer, informs us that I the $25)0 will give us only five miles F and 46at to sewer the town properly 5 new will take eight miles. It is long way better to provide for this additional mileage now and put it in while we are at it than to take it up later, and then it is not justice to those who will not be touched by putting in only five miles, to postpone the matter. We believe our people will readily provide the addi- 6 tional means if the matter is properly cailed to their attention and they are given the opportunity. We suggest to the commissioners, that at their meeting to hear report from Mr. Beddoes, which we under stand is to be held in a few days, they request him to publish a statement showing what portions of the town he ( can cover with the means at hard and also the additional amount needed to cover the entire town and then let us provide to have the additional amount voted. It is too important a matter to be delayed. It is important not only to those who will be eut .out of the sewerage but im portant to all of the citizens. The present drawing goes out Pratt or Main street as far as Mr. C. E. Summer's, and yet on the parallel street right back of him, or Johnstone street, the people who re side there are cut out. The commis sioners should submit the facts to the people plainly and let the amount be increased so as to cover all parts of the town. ATLANTIC BEACH HOTEL. This famous summer resort on Sulli van's Island has just opened for the season under new management. It is under the management of the Argyle Hgtel Company of Charleston. Those who have had the pleasure of spending any time at the Argyle know how well it is run and ~now attentive the manage ment is to the guests. The Atlantic Beach Hotel has been completely re modeled and newly furnished and those intending to goto the coast could not select a more desirable place where they will get the delightful sea breezes and the surf bathing as well as the comforts of a first class hotel than to hie themselves to the Atlantic Beach hotel and Sullivan's Island. [Jot,' From St. Philip a. The people after so long a drouth in this section have at last got a good season and are now busily at work. The crors have come out wonderfully and there is a good prospect for a good crop if the seasons continue. On Monday night some ooys and girls and were on their way to commencement the rain overtook them. After getting a ducking they had to return to their home.1 On June the 19th a severe storm1 passed over this section. It took a streak about half a mile wide. Just a while before sun down the sun was shining beautifully and shortly after that a prettier shower never was seen fall. A short while before sundown there was a small cloud that came over, then1 commenced the storm. Several sharp flashes of lightning were seen and loud * peals of thunder were heard, then the wind commenced blowing furiously and also heavy rain and hail were falling and the hail fell very rapidly for a short period. It did a great deal of damage and the crops that were looking so beautiful were beat all to pieces by the hail. For a short time the ground had ~ a layer of ice upon it. The wind blew down several trees and some out houses. i While this severe storm was going on the people were very much frightened, ~ for their dwelling houses quivered. The ~ news was heard this morning in various C directions of people repairing their 1 houses and gardens which that dreadful I storm had damaged. I will close with much success to The Herald and News. Feathertop. "Uncle" Matt Smith, an octogena rian of Saluda, who has been suffering 0 intensely for the past three months with senile gangrene in the left foot and leg, underwent an operation on last 1 Thursday afternoon and stood it man fully. The operation was successfully performed by Dr. 0. B. Mayer, of this city, assisted by Drs. Kirksey and Gun ter, of Saluda. The member amputated was perfectly dead almost to the knee. The patient, although in his 84th year, rallied from the effects of the anaes thetic in three minutes after the chloro form was removed, and holding up the 11 stump laughingly remarked: "Now 0 I'm well fixed: two legs and one foot." The operation was perfectly successful 3 in every particular and Dr. Mayer was 0 back in Newberry at his usual practice . early Friday morning. aved From an Awful Fatte 'Fvervhody said I had consutrption,' L8 write_ .\l rs A NI.
