.. H. LULL. EDTOa. Tug OANOIDATE . There are five candidates in the cam paign for Governor. One week of the State canvas has been oompleted and everything has moved along smoo,hly thus far. .Capt. D. C.- Heyward is the only one who has not been in politics before. He is a rice planter and lives in Colleton County. He is young and capable and from the reports of the meetings is holding his own with the old stagers on the stump. He is prominent in the Knights of Pythias and would make a safe man in the gubernatorial office. KHon. W. J. Talbert has been in poli tics in this State for a good many years. He was superintendent of the State Penitentiary in the early nineties., and has been in Congress for ten years representing the second district, and was elected several times without oppo sition. He comes from Edgefield, is a good campaigner and a clean man. CoL Jas. H. Tillman is the present Lieutenant-Governor and also hails from Edgefield. He made a canvas of the State two years ago and developed re markable strength, defeating several popular and strong men. Heis a sonof Col. Geo. D. Tillman and a nephew of Senator B. R. Tillman. He is probably the best advertised man in the race and has plenty of sense and is a good speaker. - Hon. M. F. Ansel comes from Green vile and is very popular in his old cir cuit of which he was Solicitor for several years. He is a good speaker and has friends in all parts of the State, is a good lawyer and an excel lent gentleman. Dr. W. H. Timmerman used to come from Edgefield but is now a citizen of Lexington. He was State Senator from Edge"k and afterwards LieutF-iant Governor, and for two terms -'tate Treasurer. He is a successful business man and of sturdy integrity of charac ter. About the second week in July these gentlemen will bein Newberry, together with the other candidates for State odmes?, and will appear before the peo The ofice of Lieutenant-Governor is also u important one, for life is un certain and sometimes Governors die, and under our laws the Lieutenant Governor in that case becomes Gover nor. In selecting a man for this posi tion we shold choose one we would be willing to vote for for Governor. There are only three candidates in this race. Hon. Cole. L Blease comes from New berry and has represented this county three times in the legislature. He is a lawyer and a good speaker and is known to allour people.' Of course he will carry this eounty. Hon. Frank B. Gary comes from Ab beville County and is a lawyer and was for several years a member of the legislature and Speaker of the House. He made the race twoyears ago for Gov ernor and was defeated. His people went from Newberry and he has many relatives in this county. CoL Jno. T. Sloan is from Columbia andia ason of ColJno. T. Sloan who was for many years clerk of the House of Representatives. Col Sloan is a lawyer and represented his county at one time in the State Senate. He made the race two years ago for Lieutenant Governor, and was in the second pri mary with Col. Tiflman, who was elected. For Attorney-General there are only two andiat+es, Col U. X. Gunter, the very efficient asistant Attorney-Gen eral, and Hon. W. F. Stevenson, the present Speaker o)f the House of Repre sentatives. CoL Gunter is a native of Lexington County, but.his home is at present in Spartanburg. He was private secre tary to.Gov. Jno. Gary Evans and at the expiration of his term settled in Spartanburg for the practice of law. When Gen. Bellinger was elected At torney-General, CoL. Gunter was ap pointed assistant and has made a very efficient officer and is a safe counselor. Mr. Stevenson is a native of North Carolina but has resided for many years in Cheraw, Chesterfield County, and is a lawyer of experience and ability. He was until recently attorney for the Sea board Air Line. When he decided to become a candidate for Attorney Gen eraf? he resigned his position with the railroad. - In a subsequent issue we will try to give something of the candidates for the other positions. There are about thirty-two in all for the various State offices, not to speak of those for the Senate and Congress. The report comes from Washington that the name of Major Micah Jenkins is being seriously considered by the president in connection with the ap pointment of an internal revenue col lector for South Carolina. Koester's appointment, it seems, is not likely soon to be confirmed by the Senate. Bow Is Is Done.
