DISPZNSARY,*-.COo,L FUNV. The Dispensary a short time ago turned over to the school the sum of $25,000. The comptroller general has been appor tioning this among the counties so as to make up the deficiency which requires t hat the fuud shall be so apportioned that each school in the counties shall have at least $75. Several of the counties already have that amount for each school in the county, and therefore get no share of this first distribution. After this deficien cy is made up the dispensary pchool fund is to be distributed upon the enrolment pro rata. Some of the counties must have a very large number of schools or are do ing very little for them. For instance in this first distribution Horry gets $2, 907.73. This would give $75 to, forty schools or very nearly that. If there were only forty schools in the county it would show that the schools had- received prac tically nothing before this distribution. But of course there are more than that number. Suppose we make the number 8o. and it would show that the county and State tax&for schools amounted to only $37-50 per school for the year. We do not know the exact number of schools in this county, but we should think there are not as many as forty in the county That would be nearly fonr to the town ship. Newberry gets out of this deficiency fund only $115 44. We give elsewhere the amount by counties as published in the News and Courier. The last report of the dispensary direc. tors showed to the credit of the school fund over half a million dollars, bul stated that it was not available, as it wa in stock. This money should be available by this time. There was a large stock on hand at that time, and much more than should have been carried, but the board .claimed that it was good judgment to buy largely, as the price of corn and grain was advancing, and naturally, the price of liquor would advance. According to the roll which has recently been made up there are 7,688 confederate pensioners on the roll this year againsi 6,503 last year, an increase of 18 per cent. In Newberry County we have on the roll 152 against 146 last year, an increase of .four per cent. In Chesterfield the in crease over last year is 52 per cent , and in Oconee County 59 per cent. The largest number on the roll in any county is Spartanburg, 655 The next highest is Anderson with 442.' Then comes Green ville with 393 and Colleton with 332. The smallest number is from Georgetown witi L/ only 42. Lutheran servlces. The coming together of the Luth. eran people of Spartanburg yesterda3 was highly gratifying to Rev. After the reli glous services had been conducted a conference was held, and it was unani mously decided to hold regular ser vices in the South Converse streel grgied school building on every seconc and fourth Sunday at 4 p. m. The nex1 service, however, will not be held un til the fourth Sunday in May. The farmers have about finished planting cotton. Prayer meeting will be conducted every Wednesday night at the MetLho dist church. .Mr. Bonds McCrackin, of Whitmires, on flis way home from the Exposition stopped over a few days with his aunt, Mrs. W. H.- Edly. Our Sunday School is progresaig nicely under the management of the superintendent, Mr. G. W. L. Spear man. Mrs. S. M. Duncan is quite sick at this writing, we hope she will soon be up again. Mr. and Mrs. John Swittenberg have moved into their new residence on Main street. Mr. S. B. Aull is having a neat piazza, put around his residence, and when completed it will be a "beaut." Mr. W. H. Eddy is adding a neat appearance to his place by touching up with white-wash. As soon as this has been completed, which will be some days yet, checks will be sent to each county for disbursment. Directly after the marriage cere mony, Mr and Mrs. Smith boar-ded the Southern passenger train and came to Greenville, where they will make their home. On Wednesday evening a re ception was tendered the bride and groom by Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Hunter, at their home in Washington street. There was a large number of guests in attendance and the evening proved highly enjoyable and a success in every particular.
