A THIRTEEN STORY.
How That UnIncky Number Figured in a
R.tilroad .Accident.
Columbia Record, 2 1st.]
A well known railroad man of
Spartanburg city is authority for the
scecuracy of the following narrative,
which tends mightily to confirm the
fears of those who hold in special
horror the unlucky "13," says the
Spartanburg Herald:
Train No. 13, coming from Colum
bia on March 13th, broke down 13
miles from Jonesville at 13 minutes
after 3 o'clock. Word was sent to
Spartanburg for a r6lief engine and
the only engine on the yards at the
time was engine No. 13, which was
sent to haul the passengers here.
This engine arrived 13 minutes after
6 o'clock. It was found further that
the engineer and conductor of the
ill-fated train were both born on the
13th day of the month.
Ecouony in Baking.
There is more dependent upon the
baking powder, so far as economy in
making biscuit and cake is concerned,
than in any other one thing.
The cheap. alum baking powders
average about five per cent. of leav
ening gas. Therefore it will take
three times as much alum powder
to raise the same cake or biscuit as
it does of the Royal powder, for in
stance, which is a cream. of tartar
powder with three times the leaven
ing strength, so the actual cost with
the alum powder is the greatest.
Further than this, however, the
cream of tartar powder makes the
finest kind of food, while the alum
powders frequently fail when all the
eggs, flour and butter used are wasted.
The greatest economy in the use
of a baking powder like the Royal
is in the healthfulness of the food it
makes. It saves in doctor's bills many
times its cost over alum powders.

[Florence Times.]
Mr. D. T. McNeill, enroute from
Conway to the Charleston exposi
tion, spent last night in the city. Mr.
MNeill had a very interesting and
valuable curio to place on ex
hibition. It was a pistol of the
duelling make, that belonged to Jeff
Davis, and the name of the President
of the Confederacy was engraved
thereon. The pistol was sold to Dr.
J. S. Dusenbury of Conway by an
old slave, who had traced its history
and proved it to be genuine. It was
mounted in silver. The pistol will
doubtless attract great attention at
the exposition.
