McSweene) bas granted a pir don to Ellen B,wer#, a negro woman, who was convicted in i bis county at the July term for 1901, 4of violating the dis pensary law. She was sentenced to serve a term of three montbs on the county casingang or pay a fine of $103. She was pardoned on a petition of citizens of the community in which she lived. She was convicted last July and on 'socount of having an infant at the time the execution of the sentence was stayed. Newberr vs. Clinton. The Newberry College team leaves today for Clinton, where it will play two -games with the Presbyterian Col lege of South Carolina at that Place. One this afternoon and one to-morrow loring. The team is In good condition and, has bad a good deal of practice, and we expect.them to win twovictories before they return. The Clinton team will come to Neu berry on next Friday, the 21st, to play a game that afternoon and one on the morning of the 22nd. The probabilities are that both games will be close and interesting. V.lm.ge Defeat. Newberry. In a game of ball on the college dia mond Tuesday afternoon the college defeated the cit,y nine by a score of 23 to 5. The game was slow, but at times goods work was done ont both sid.e, The college team played godd ball throughout and reflected'credit on the trainingthey have received fromCoach Warran. Simpson did some good work in the box and Cabaniss behind the bat, and, they were welt supp rted by the rest of the team. C., will deliver a lecture in the armpry to-night at eight o'clo"k His leeture will be upon histo rical subjects. and will also include some general remarks on "an ideal and real married life" from a bachelor's point of view. Admission 15 ents for adults and 10 cents for children. Mr Furman will also deliver a lec ture to the echoot children this morn ing Mr. Furm'sn is an enthusiastic stu dent of South Carolina history and has done much to preserve~ it. We feel sure his lecture will be interesting and we hope he will have a full house. Newberry College and the Expiwi Ian. Our trip will be much more than merely a college visit, for, in addition to the college party, there will be a large number of teachers and pupils from the graded school, besides many of our friends who are not directly connected witn either school. We shall go by special train, leaving Ne wherry Tuesday morning, A pril 1st, at 8 or 9 o'clock. The fare for the round trip will be $3 48, if we buy block - tickets, In groups of 25 persons or more. Those who go on a block ticket will have to return together; those who do not care to return with the party will have to buy individual tickets, at $3.90. It, is probable that arrange men ts will be made in the purchase of tickets so that some of the party can remain in Charleston until Saturday, while those who desire to do so can come home Friday. Lndging and breakfast can be secured at 75 cents each for those who belong to the school-, and at very reasonable rates for all. An announce ment next week will give the hour at which we shall leave Newberry, and the name of the road by which the party will travel. G. B. C. After Three Years Sheriff Buford CapturA a Negro for Whom a Seated Sentence iN Awaiting. The following is taken from the Spartanburg Herald of the 11th iust: Sheriff M. M. Buford, ot Newberry county, adopts the. policy of keeping verla-etingly at it when It comes to capturing a criminal at large, and con equently his labors are attended with atisfactory results. It takes a con. iderable length of time, and even years roll by, but as in this case, his avert like perseverance wins out. Yesterday Sheriff Buford arrived in be city in quest of Dock Ruff, alias ichard Ruff, colored, who over three rears ago disappoared from the court oom in the Newberry court house, Ld against whom for that period of J-ne has been pending a sealed sen nce for assault and battery with in ten to kill. Several times Ruff has een located in Chariot e, Greenville, Wlanta and other cities, but good uck was with him to the extent that ie evaded capture. Having secured information'that Ruff as here the Sherif came up yester lay, and soon had his man well located n officer of th e city police force ar sted Ruff and today he will be carried Newberry by Sheriff Buford.
