The Sober i hought Maketh Jim Sick. 1s VERY SORRY IF HE HAS BEEN ,1311&;NSTftUEL).y But it is Nobody's Business Except Those Chipping In a Dollar, that South Caro lina Has Been Brought to Shame. [Special to The State.] Edgefield, Feb. 28.-When Lieut. Gov. Tillman was seen this afternoon with reference to the Roosevelt matter, al though unwell, he said: "I regret very much that I am compelled to make any further statement in regard to this mat ter. I do not see why it has called forth so much comment, but I do not propose to be placed in the light, by my con duct, of having been the cause of Presi dent Roosevelt'b decision not to attend the Charleston exposition. If such construction has been placed upon it either by him or the people of Charles ton, I deplore it deeply. He may, how ever, make this the pretext of,.not at tending the exposition, but it cannot be the cause. I am in no way connect ed with the exposition officially or oth erwise except as a South Carolinian who is proud of it and wants to see it succeed. I in no way attempted to rep resent the exposition authorities in my telegram to the president, and it can not be so construed without intention ally debauching my words. The mat ter of the presentation of the sword by President Roosevelt to Major Jenkins was purely a private and social concern with which those who are now loud in their criticism of me had nothing to do. Certainly the editors of The Record, Post andState were not contributors, although to be frank and just, which is more than they have been to me, they were not asked. However, Governor McSweeney, who has given an inter view in connection with this matter, wasasked to contribute, and declined upon the ground, as I recall, that he had to contribute to so many charities and other public matters he was finally unable to do so, and I feel from experi ence that he was honest in his state ment. "So far as the list of the paid contrib utors to the sword fund is concerned, I desire to add, without having the list before me, that I only know of three who were not consulted before the tele gram to the president was sent, to wit: Col. Wilie Jones, who has been of valn 'able assistance both in contributifig and selecting the sword, whom how ever I endeavored to reach by long dis tance telephone, as Mr.,T. H. Hammond of the Augusta Herald will testify; an other is Senator Talbird of Beaufort, a liberal contributgr, whomi I endeavored to reach but failed; the third and last was Senator Tillman, whom I did not ask as I knew the delicate position In which he was placed. As for the tel egrams received by me from the con tributors Is a matter with which those who did not contribute have no con cern. I have no doubt, however, that they, like himself, are ready to abide by the result of their action. I do not care and do not propose to have any thing further to say, however much I may be slandered and misrepresented." Dots from st. PhlHus. We are glad to see that the weather has made a change, and we hope that warm weather will now continue. I have heard several people say that this has been the hardest winter for years. There is a lot of sickness in our community at this writing. Mr. W. D. Halfacre who has been in bed for about two months has made very little change. Hope that he will be better at my next writing. Mr. A. P. Ruff happened with a very sad accident last Sunday after noon while he was enjoying a ride with his best girL His horse got frightened and ran a'way, throwing them both out of the buggy and hurt ing them very badly. We are glad to say they are improving. The farmers in this section are waiting for the land to dry out so they can begin preparations for a new crop. We are glad to say that St. Philip's has a pastor and he will commence preaching this month. We* are glad to say that our merch ants are beginning to lay in their spring goods. Our little town Ka lula is in a flourishing condition. As news is,scarce in this town I will close, with much success to The Herald and News. Feathertop. March 7, 1902.. South Carolina Day at ,ha Exposition March 2oth, 1902. The exposition at Charleston seem to be attracting a great deal of atten tion from the people of the country at large. Cincinnati and Chicago have sent large delegations there to inspect the show. The governors of Georgia, West Virginia and Indiana have been there with their staffs and others all seem to unite on one ver dict, that it is as creditable an expo sition as any held in this country. The Legislature of South Carolina pl and the Governor of the State, have an given their endorsement to the expo- at sition, and urged that the people of hE the State visit the exposition at least wl once, and have named March 20th as South Carolina day, with the idea by that there should be a grand rally of A] South Carolina on the exposition tu grounds on that day. PE It is South Carolina'e first attempt C to show to the country at large the ar industries, resources and possibilities or of the State. They have been well in displayed. en Let us all go, and by our presence w] show an appreciation and interest in S, what has been done. se th CI South Carolina Day at the Exposition, dE Thursday, March 29th. Some, reasons why the people of it the State should visit the exposition B n that day: First. It is a Sonth Carolina expo sition in which the State and the an people are vitilly interested, as it Ci presents to the people of the country ce at large for the first time the great1 * possibilities of South Carolina, bothd as a manufacturing and agricultural e* State. Second. The State has a building 8 at the exposition in which are exhib-p ited the industries and resources of t South Carolina. Many of the peo- ta ple do not realize the magnitude of f the possibilities that are within our t borders. Go then and see them.G You will profit by the trip in many tr ways. 1 Third. In the cotton palace, comn-' merce, minerals and forestry, ma-, chinery and electricity, and West In dia buildings will be seen many ex hibits that will justify the trip. Fourth. To those who have never seen the exhibits of the United States Government, seeing them alone is worth more than the cost of the trip. Fifth. The exhibits in the Woman's building will be of interest to every woman in South Carolina. The dis play is far superior to the woman's work at any other exposition. Sixth. When you have seen all the exhibits of interest, the midway offers t3 attractions, where you can spend as much time in pleasure as you e Seventh. The people of CharlestLn desire you to see the exposition, to see from your own observation that they projected the exposition in your interest, as well as theirs, and that we should be again united as one people. Eighth. Thie railroad rates are very low, and accommodationis for all can be secured in Charleston at rea sonable rates. Party or parties desiring to secure accommodations in advance will be able to secure same by correspond ing with Mrs. A. H.
