songs and recitations, all of which
were nicely and perfectly rendered.
The interior of the charch. around

formed a beautiful btckground for the

After a brief addrcss by Mrs. Redus,

JOHN DUNCAN.
4)ne Handved and Fifty Year% Since HC
.-ettled In Nbwberry Couivy.
Editor of The Herald and News:
In the article on Newberry contained
in Robert Mills' "Statistics of South
Carolina" (published 1826) we read as
follows:
"In the year 1752, (three years pre
vious to Braddock's defeat) Mr. John
Duncan, a native of Aberdeen, in Scot
land, that had formerly emigrated to
the province of PenL-sylvania, removed
to this section of the country, and set
tled on a creek in this district, now
bearing his name.
"Mr Duncan was at this time the
highest settler in the fork between
Broad and Saluda rivers, by ten miles,
his nearest neighbor was Jacob Pen
nington, living on Enoree river below:
e was the only man at this time that
had either negro, wagon, or still, in
this part of the world."
It will be seen that it is exactly 150
years since John Duncan settled lb
what is now Newberry county. Atten
ion is called to this anniversary, as it
may int-'rest some of your readers.

NEWBERRY CIRCUIT.
Pastor Boyd Writes of HiN Work and His
People to His Church Paper.
We have entered hopefully upon our
3rd year on Newberry Circuit. I have
every reason to believe that my return is
agreeable to our people. We have had
no "Poundings," but very many tokens
of appreciation f.om our people, consis
ting in flour, back-bones, spare-ribs, sau
sages, lard, potatoes, can goods, honey
and four flue Turkeys from different
friends. Now, who would not render the
best service possible to such a people?
Our first Quarterly Conference was held
yesterday here in the City of Newberry
the rain having hindered the holding of:
the meeting at the time first appointed,
December 27-28, 1901. Brother Herbert
tendered us the use of his beautiful
Church in which to hold the meeting, it
being a central point for a business ses
sion and in easy reach of all the brethren.
Brother Child was with us in his usual
cheerful mood, and presided in his free
and easy manner. The Board of Stewards
eighteen in number, were all present ex
cept two. We missed our true and faith
ful, life-long friend and brother, Gilliam
Senn, who has been a faithful steward
more than twenty years at Trinity Church,
he having cast in his lot with Brother
Dant's flock at Summerton- Our loss is
their gain. His family is missed by us
all. The Stewards made the same assess
ment of ministerial support as last year
$700 for pastor, which amount was paid
in fqll last year with a nice surplus.
We reported quite a number of ad
ditions since onr last Quarterly Confer
ence, whose named had not been reported
in our Circuit Conference Minutes. A
weekly prayer-meeting is held at each
church on the circuit. The Stewards re
ported $62 50 for ministerial support and
$51 9o for other objects. It was our
pleasure to have with us during the con
ference Brother 'Herbert of Central
Methodist Church and Brother Edwards
the new pastor of O'Nea11 Street Meth
odist Church. Brother Edwards has al
ready won the hearts of his people, and,
multiplying friends by scores. Brother
Herbert is to be our Conference host I
have already spoken to him to give me a:
good place to stay.-D. P. Boyd in So.
