She iad to flee to the residence of some vhite people in the neighborhood for irotection. Mayor Klettner tried on the a-e the next morning and fined Fry 25 or 30 days on the chain gang. The town was thrown into a wave of xcitement yesterdry afternoon by a lephone message from the new Mollo on mill stating that a negro had illed a white man with a brick. The policemen and sevelal others iade their way to the new mill, but the hite man whose niame was given as riffn, haLd recovered from the shock nd was sitting up. The negro wh" truck the white man, is Wade Nelson, negro well known in Newberry. Griffin, the white man, is a carpen r and had been at work on the opera ive houses. He was drinking and left ihere he had been at work and went ver to the mill building where Nelson, ho is a brick-layer, was at work. They ad some words, when the report is hat Griffin struck the negro twice rith a brick, when the negro ereturned he blow, knocking Griffin senseless r a while.
