Col. W. L. Stanley, the General
Counsel of the Seaboard Air Line. was
in the city Tuesday on business for his
road. He expressed himself as highly
pleased with the thrift and enterpho
of the city, and to a friend he said it
was a "town of the first magnitude."

nounced as the best he had seen in his
travels. The Neiwherry Hotel was an
especial object of his praise.

audience at the Grand opera house last

The play has lots of action in it and
a good compan:- produced it in a satis
factory manner. During the perform
ance several plea'ing specialtIes were
introduced and the singing and dancing
was good, especially Miss Cmrrie Ken
rick who has a charming voice and
knows how to use it,. Messrs. Gorman
and Proctor gave a very unique musical
specialty. They were dressed in real
Scotch costomeb and played ma-y

The town was thrown into a wave of
excitement yesterdry aft,ernoon by ai
telephone message from the new Mollo
hon mill stating that a negro had
killed a white man with a brick.
The policemen and sevelal other's
made their way to the new mill, but the
white man whose name was given as
Grillin, had recovered from the shock
and. was sitting up. The negro whl"
struck the while man, Is WVado Nelson.

Gritlin, the white man, is a carpen
ter and had been at work on the opera
tive houses. Ele was drinking and left
where he had been at work and went
over to the mill building where Nelson,
who is abrick-layer, was at work. Tihe'y
had some words, when the report Is
that Griflin struck the negro twice
with a brick, when the negro ,returned
the blow, knocking Grillin senseless
for a while.
TIhe ease wll likely come up before
the mayor this morning for a hearing.
Trho uabove facts are as we were able to
gather them just after thle difflculty.

The money drawer was torn piece by
