This is very vicious-exceedingly vi
ciotu4. We had La idea that, the Oi

the id vocate of republican doc

the Observer comnended the position
of Seiator 'MeLaurin and w\as c,isid
ored by Senator McLaurin and his
friends as fighting along the samie
Ilies. Ilat the Observer commended
the work of Senntor Melmaurin ini con
trolling the patronage.
Lately, however, we halve noticed
that Siiator M l,aurin i has not been so
warmly Com'fentded and it now appears
to the Obset-ver that he "hats golle,
bag und baggage, into the republican
party. 'Senator McLaturin haits nol
changed his position. But the Oh

on this i question so much tihat we hard

thought we saw signs of a return to the
advocacy of democratic measures anld
lin the kindliest of spirit gave it wel

W\hen the Observer says there was
"mfal ice"' ini it and thalt it was deliber

is a(bsolut,eIy false. We have never
tried1 to injure the Observer. We don't
have to, eveni if we wainted1 to The
Obser'ver suits us exacetly.
Of courise the Obser'ver hats oplinions.
Who said it did not? It, never changes.
No. "Who said( It? It never' ehanged
from the tillvocacy of 'Till man andl Tiii
mism1tl5 to a most, bitter opponent whoa
Tillman was lending his hosts to victo
ry. It never changed fromn an endorse
ment of the dispensary to a hard fighter
against. tile system. It, never changed
ffrom an endorsement of McLaurin to a
sover'e critic of him. No, its opinions
are like unlto the laws of the Medes
and Persians, unchangeable. Look up
your ti tes, Cotemuporary, and refr'esh
your memory. But If it mnakos you so
angry t,o welcome you "t,o an advocacy
of democratIc mecasures," we will apo)l
ogize and het you state what mieasuiros
you are advocating and where your
opinions lead you. We have found it
difliciult to keep upl with the opinions
of the Observer, and they may have
chat;ged 8ine the last issue, and we
will not uindertaike to pursuie those
opinions any further.
The flerald and News has said nothing
about the efforts of the Bell Telephone

one can secure signatures to a petition.
Many people do this without knowing
