A GiRCAT ' X'OsI lION. The Charleston Expostttotn was for inally opened yesterday and at 12 o'clock, President Roosevelt touched the button which set in motion the great inachin ery of this, the greatest Exposition ever held in the South. It has required lots of energy and per serverance and good business ability fo a city the size of Charleston to pronote and bring to a successful completion an enterprise of such magnitude, and Char leston deserves and inu,t have the co-op eration of the whole State and the whole South during its progress. For it will not alone benefit Charleston, it will hen efit the entire State and the South and the whole country. The Southern people should take a just pride in this Exposition, for it marks a great stride in the uphuildling of the new South. A little more thant a qiuarter of a century ago, this State, the leader of her sister States in the States Rights and secession moveinent, emer ged from the bloodiest conflict in his tory with many of her sons dead oin the field of battle, her homies leso late and in ruins, her capital city in ashes, beret of almost everything ex cept trust in God and hope for the fn ture. Yesterday in her principal city, in the very "cradle of secession" was formally opened an exposition to show to the world our resources and our ad vantages, to let them know w hat Sont Ii ern pluck and energy and perseverance has Aecomplished within the last thirty live vears. That this Exposition will be a great Success is the fervent hope of every time sin of South Carolina and of the South The fifty-seventh congress convened at iwoti vesterdav. This congress is the mlo'st lsgely republican in some years, and it is not probable that on a party question the democrats will be able to accomplish anything whatever. The President's message will bc sent in today. There seems to be a gool deal of speculation as to whether friendly rela tions will he maintained between Roose velt and congress, as was the case (uring President McKinley's administration, or whether they will continually war as was the case ini Cleveland's administration. A gxxl deal depends upon this, and the democrats may be able to make sone sniall capital out of the mnatter, if they get 'he President in one of his strenuous mlto(als. However, we shall soon see what we shall see. One thing is certain, there will be some speech making. Prosperity News. Mlrs. Augustus Willis, of Saluda, vis ited Mrs. H. P. Wicker last week. i r. Both teams l-ft Augusta Thursday night after the game for Edgefield, where the second game was played on FrIday. The line-up of the teans in the second game was the same as in the first, except that Huggins was put in Lott's place. Twenty and fifteen minute halves were chosen. Captain Moore won the toss up and chose to defend the nort,h goal which gave him a slight advantage of the wind. The bail was kicked by Edgefleid, caught by Newberry and taken to with in two yardis of Edgefield's goal, when time was called, neither side scorinig In the first half.
