A raid was made on a gambling den in

On September first a general candy
making establish ment will be put up) in
the store now occup)ied by Mr. B. W.
West on lower main street. Mr. WVest

Side Tracks ont the C,. N. & L.
Yesterday morning the side track
from the Qa., N. & L. track to Tool's
briok yard was completed. The side
track from the same road has recently
been extended to I' 'r's gravel pit and
work has been commenced on the side
track to the Mollohon Manufacturing
.! Co. Mr. Anderson is foreman of the
gang which is doing this work.

The Court of General Sessions for
Newberry County adjourned Friday.
No cases were tried and nothing of in
terest was done after Thursday night.
Big wind storms on last Thur'sday are
reported fa'om different sections of the
coaty. In somne places trees were
twisted off and small houses blown over.
MissIlone Fer'gurson, who has been
on a visit to Misses Lillian and Anunio
Jamleson at the Newvberry Hotel, re
turned to her home In L~aurens on
Saturday.
Miss Lillian Jamieson recceived the
$2.50 cash prize offered at Gilder &
Weeks' soda fountain at the eand of each
week to the young lady receiving the
highest number of votes.

Mr. Frank C. Sligh, who has been
w'orking in the Southern shops in Co
lumbia (luring the strike and has been
attacked several times by the strikers,
came homo yesterday. Ho will remain
here until Utter, one -of his assailants
who has just been caught in Virginia,
is br-ought to Columbia, when he will
return there.

Saturday night Mr. C. J. McWhirter's
grocery store, on lower Main street
near the railroad, was entered and about
$2.00 in coppers stolen from his money
drawer. Mr. McWhirter was not able
to tell whether or not any of his stock
had been taken. The thief made an en
trance through the back window, and
took the box in which the money was
kept outside and broke it up out there.
I'ortunately there was only the small
amounnt named in the box at the time.

Newberry Fantly Moves to jolumbia.
Yesterday Capt. N. B. Mazyck and
family left for Columbia, where they
have decided to make their home.
Capt. Mazyck has been connected with
this town for some forty years, having
been engaged in the railroad business
here for thirty-five years. He and his
family were prominent church workers
and ho has been lay reader in the Epis
copal church for the l)ast twenty-nine
years. Capt. Mazyck served as cap
taini throughout the Confederate wvar
and was a good soldicr and since that
time has made a good citizen. HIe and
his family leave many warm friends
here who regret to see them leave.
