the duty of the city of Charleston or

law as It Is their duty to enforce anty
other law on the statute books. And it
Is their duty to enforce It even if they
think the law to be unjust.

at dIfferent times to all the mayors of
the cities and towns of the Stato askitng
their co-operation In the enforcement
of t,he dispensary law and offering to
withdrawv the constabulary force If It

of the United States Rlear Admiral
Sohley has demanded a court of nqulry
and hIs request, has been granted by
Secretary Long. Thle four charges
made against him as given by the
WVashington P'ost are as follows':
Firat, The alleged delay off Cienfugos,
Cuba. Second, The alleged slow pro
gross towards Santiago de Cuba from
Cienfugos. Third, The retrograde
movement on the 26th and 27th of May.
Fourth, The battle of Santiago and de
struotiona of Cervera's fleet. The court
of inquiry will convene some time In
September and It Is probable that ad
miral De9ey will preside.

Wec just opened our Tuesday's Herald
and we were certainly sorry to set t hose
peor old chips which have beec culfed
about for the past two weeks. Well,
we are not going to comp)lain nor mcke
any corrections, but simpily call upon
thme public to excuse them.
Thbe residence of I. WV. Buzhardt was
st,ruck by lightning last Thursday night
18th instant. Mr. and Mrs. Buzhardt
wvere at supp)er ini the (lining room which
adjoins tIhe house. Mr. Buzhar*dt was
considerably stunned. As soon as he re
covered from the shock he thought of
his little boy who had laid down near the
firepmlaec atnd went to sleep as children
often do. He hurtridly wvent to tho
child and soon found that it was not
even awakeni from its sleep. The bolt
strucek the house .on the right of the
tirep)lace, knocking the clock and
mantle down and broke otut several
lights in the window. 'When the mantle
fell It came within about, six inches of
falling on time child's head. Notwith
standing the child was surrounded with
death blows, not a hair of its head was
tmolessed. This shows us the kind care
and protection of God over ils chil
dronet. If God be for' us wvhiat can be

We were also inforimed that tihe resi
dence of Mr. John McCullough, Jr.,
was struck by lightn ing the same night.
Mr. McCullough was not at home.
Prof. L. A. Jiawkcins gave a zono
phonie entert ainment at Union Academy
on Tuesday night, the 23d instant. We
were sorry that we could not make it
convenient to go over, but old Mrs.
Ohips andl several of the children speak
in the very highest terms of the enter
tainment.
It was our pleasure to worship with
the Christian congregation of Ebonozer
Methodist church last Sunday morn
ing and to hear a most, excellent seor
mon preached by their pastor, Rev. 1).
P. Boyd. This~ was the first time that
we have had the priviledgo of hearing
IHey. Bloyd preach. Notwithstanding
the sermon was pointed antd full of
Bible truth, yet we were not at all sur
prised as it was nothing more than we
expected.- *fheo is nothing surprising

fruit. This was the beginning of a
series of mectlngs at 10bonozor. Hev,
Bloyd announced that Roy. R. C. Wyu
lhams would p)roh in the afternoon.
We were sorry that we could not stay'
over and hear Rev. Williams' sermon.
