We have received the following let
tcr from a gcntlenan In Philadelphia
which we feel sure will be of interest
to many of our readers and especially
those who werc members of Korshaw'
brigade. The gentleman saw an adver
tisement of the history written by Col.
Dickert In a New York paper and inl
ordering a copy for himself wroto thiti
letter:
My acquaintance with Kurshaw't old
br igado was as intimato as was possible
for a Northern soldier, and on two acca
sions, entirely too Intimate for coi
fort. The battery to which I belonged
(M, 5th U. S ) was taken at Cedar Ureek
by the 8th and, I think, tho 15th South
Carolina, ad imnmediately ret,aken by
the 2nd, 5th and 6th Vermont of the
old Vormont IB'igade, 2nd Division, Oth
Corps.
This contest over the battery between
Vermont and South Carolina resulted,
among other things, in nineteen men
of both sides being killed or desper
ately wounded oni the battery front by
the bayonet alone. There were sev
oral others, myself included, slightly
wounded by bayonet thrusts, mine only
being a flesh wound in the left arm. I
am bound to say to the credit of the
South Carolinans on that occasion that
when attacked by the Vermonters they
wore badly blown from double quick
ing a long distance and also in much
disorder, always incident to a rapid
change, besides being inferior in num
bers-about as two is to three. I am
sure that Comrade Dickort's book is
not only interesting but of first-rate
historical value.
On the occasion referred to 1 was
gunner of No. 2 piece, contre section.
Four out of six canr.oncers that 1 had
were put "hors do combat," two killed
and two badly wounded. I shot my
revolver at the lieutenant who was
leading the charge immediately upon
our gun. le had on a hat was too
large for him and lie had put sonne
paper under the sweat-band to mnake it
fit. He had the hat pulled down close
to his eyes and my bullet struck a little
to the right and was dellected by the
paper wadding. However, it knocked
him down and almost at the same .1io
ment, or perhaps while falling, she had
his ankle shattered by a bullet from
the Veimont infantry. After the bat
tle I had the opportunity to aid him in
getting his wounds dressed an(d putting
him into a house just cross Meadow
Brook near the pike.
