The importance of good roads is a
gospel that is being preached in all
soctions thest, days.-August a Chron

And it is a gospel that cannot bo
proached too often or too strongly.
At loast until all of our people como

and the comfort and the economy of
good roads. If otr people could
travel over somo good roads-we

Only a few days ago we took a little
drive out over one of the roads in
Richland County from Columbia and
it was a roal pleasine to the hore
and tho occipaits of the buggy. It

the streets of Coluibia. If our peo
plo could soo these roads and drive
over them thoy would not be satis
flod intil work was commenced in
Nowberry on somo pernimont road
building. And we have pretty fair
average roaids in this county, but
they eould be much better. What

houso and build good roads out inl
every direction, amid keop on extend
ing thom intil We reach every parl
of the county. When we get these
roads it will then ho more desirable
to livo in the country than the town,
and wo will wonder how we man
aged to get aIlong so long without
such roads. Money and labor put

The C., N. & L. has made a change
in its schdlio which wvent into of
feot yesterday. The through freight
which has been passing hero at night
will now pass Newborry in the morn
ing at 8 o'clock, and arrive in Colum
bia at 10.30. This will give tI.e
people from Laurens and all the
other stations an opportunity to go
to Columbia in the morning. We
tre sorry that connections are such
that the road cannot give us an after
noon train out of Columbia, but this
is an improvement and we are thank
ful for it. The trainmiastor, Col. J.
A. Summersett, tells us that this
train will make the schedule, and
will not wait on connections or any.

record yeaterday. Every train was
r-un on time and wvent through with
out any hitch. WVe hope this record
will be kept up.
A lady who knew the late William
