Presidlent Hiardly has set the pace
for other colleges. College boys
are not any more addicted to the
cigarette evil than othe's, for it
seems to have a p)eculiar faciniation
for boys. We are accustomed to

peculiar p)roperty of that wart upon
society-the dtude; btit, if we are
not miistaken, w e have seen boys
whose most marked characteristic

The cigarette is an evil, and that
contiinually. \We know of one State
which. for the sake of the boys,
has legislated against their manu
facture and sale. But when the
courts came to execute the law,
well, they "executed" it, and now
the State must legislate again. The
cigarette inust go along with other
nuisances that are sapping the lives
of our otherwise noble youths. We
know, and have read, of not a few
persons whose poor health, luiiacy
or death as the case may be was at
tributed by competent physicians to
the baneful cigarette. Whatever
is poisooous in tobacco the smoker
of cigarette gets it. Into the lungs
the smoke, laden with nicotine, a
deadly poison, is drawn and the
whole system tius becomes an easy
prey to its ruin.
\Vh do not other college presi
dents follow the worthy lead of Mr.
Ilardy? Are there not as noble boys
in other colleges as in the A. and
M. at Starkville? There are, and
let the cigarette be outlawed from
our colleges.
