Yesterday afternoon the Drayton
Rutherford Chapter of the Daughters
of the Confederacy was charmingly
entertained at tea at the hospitable
home of Judge Y, J. Popd. At the
meeting, Mrs. Goorge Johnstone ten
dered her roignation as President, and
Miss Eloise Wei-h was unanimously
elected to that ollice with Miss Eli::a
beth Dominick as Secretary and Treas
urer. Mrs. George Johnstone will be
the delegate to the State Convention
which meets in Rock Hill early in De
cember.

After a brief illness at her home near
Silver Street, Mrs. W. W. Spearman
died Sunday morning, November 18th,
1000, aged 32 years. She was a noble
Christian wvoman, and pansse'd away as
she hnd lived, "'leaning ou? the everlast
ing arm." She was the d.tughter of
Mr. G. F. Long, and leaves a drvoted
husband and sweet, little (daughter, I e
sides many relatives and friends, to
mourn her sad death. 11er funeral was
held at Zion yesterday at 2 p. mn., where
her remains were laid to rest till the

Mrs. Ella IcLenna Wright, wife of
the Rev. Oeo. A. Wright, pastot of the
First Baptist church, died at tho pa
sonage in Newberry yesterday after
noon at six o'clock, after a long and
painful illness of more than eight
weeks.
-)me six weeks ago she was taken to
the hospital in 1altimore where the
sk.ill of the physician was ballied by the
dis-ase which was gradually taking the
IWe away. Everything that science and
tender and loving hands could do was
done, hut to no avail, and yesterday af
ternoon at the close of the day her life
on this earth was closed and her spirit
was released from the agoiles and -uf
fering of the lesh1.
Mrs. Wright was the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. 1N. W. McLenna, of .1->hn
ston, S. C., and bectime Mrs. Wright
jubt seventeen ynarn ago. Four chil
dren have blessed the union, two Loys
and two girls. Mr. and Mrs. Wright
cIIe to Newberry jiust ten years ago
and during that time it las been our
pleasuro to know the family quite weil.
Mrs. Wright was a kind neighbor, a
lovintg and devoted wife, an indulge.t
and atrectionate mother, and a Gh-is
tian woman. It Is sometimes very hard
to recognize the hand of a lovinLy
heavenly father in the dispensations of
Providence, but we must remember
that our vision now is limited and that
he tells us that he chastenet'h for our
good, and thatl he cannot err. She is
survived by her father, a brother, hus
band and children, and to these we
extend our sincere sympathy.
Mr. Wright is also quite ill, and has
been confined to the bed for more than
two weeks.
THE FUNEIZAL,.
The funeral of Airs. Wright will be
held tamorrow iorning at half-past, ten
o'clock from the residence, service to
be conducted at the -grave. Interment

Anotlier Lanmaik Gone.
One by one our oldest and best citi
zens are called to that bourne whence
no traveler returns, and today it be
cones our painful duty to chronie!e the
death of Mr. William Langford, which
sad event occurred yesterday morning
at about six o'clock. lie had been in
declining health for many mont.hs, but.
was confined to his room onlyi a few
weeks before the summons came.
William Langford was born near
Lewle's ferry, in Lexington Comitty,
about eighty years ago. In the bloom
of manhood he married a Alits Lewie,
near his childhood home, who deeeased
about ten years ago. He moved to
Newberry before the war between the
States, and hero resided to the end of
his days. Here he made many friends
and here he bequeaths to his large faim
ily a good name.
Unto our deceased citizen were born
nine children: Mr. A. J. S. Langford,
Mrs. Melinda Higgins, Mrs. E. P.
Matthewes, MrIs. Jack Henderson, Nrs.
J1. R. Davidson, and M rs. J. F. Epting,
who survive him, and tihrec who pre
ceded him to the spirit land.
In early life Mr Langford followed
the business of butcherIng, and later,
though successful to a marked degree,
many years ago turned his attent,ion
exclusively to planting, at which he has
since been a leader, setting an example
worthy of emulation to others in that
honorable vocation.
Our good old friend has gone, and
with all who knew him and loved
him we say, peace to his ashes, ils
funeral was held this morning in Rose
mont Cemetery, the obsequies being
performed by Rev. M. G. G. Scherecr,
Rev. E. P. McClintock. D. D., and Rev.
WN. I. Herbert, in the presence of a
large concourse of sorrow ing relatives
and friends.

died in the hospital at Augusta, Ga.,
on Friday last. His health had been
poor some time and about two weeks
ago he was taken to the hospital for

planter, a good neIghbor and a kind

with her in mourning his death.
