The tabulated returns, in Wholo or in part from every county in South
Carolina toll so plainly the story of the primary election on Tuosday that
littlo now may bo -uid.
Because of the unusually large .number of candidates on the State ind
colunty tickets thi; year, the result, always diflicult to obtain promptly in
South Carolitin, bonse of the "Iagnificeit distancel" inl soeon of the
Coun1itie, has been tvon more retarded and the showing of 73,000 votes ob
tained the day after tho election is a feat not beforo acconplished. No
foi t or expenso bz., bon sparod in obtaining thoso r<p.rk.
Thoro aro moro Irprises. Messrt. Gary and Patterson have received
fewor votes thai the general public expected and Gov. AlcSweenev seems
to live gotten a goud many of them. He is now leading Col. ioyt by
over two thousand, whilo the third man is quite distauced.
Col. J. I. Tillnji:to and Col. Sloan seemed booked for i second raeo.
Tho contest betwieen Treasurer Timimorman and Mr. Jenniings is remarka
bly close. The very large vote the incumbent received in Charleston,
wimped out many minor mzjorities in the State.
Messrs. W1. D. %anus and Wharton will have to struggle for railroad
conmissioner in th. next priniary.
S'arboroughi and Norton will light for Congress, whilo _Johnson' s lead
ovor Wilson is too long to iko further count iniervsting.

In the racos for - J icitors, H ildebrand defonts Thomas in the first circuit!
Davis has a majority of 1,000 over Sinms in the Secoud; Johnson beats
Brown in the fourt',; Thurmond is ro olected over Muller in the fifth;
eury is re-lected 1ver both Hough and McDow in tho nixth aind Boggs
defoiats Mooney by '67 votes in the eighth. There whre no contests in the
third and seventh, Wilson and Sense.
