It is charged in some quarters
that Mr. Patterson is brought out
and supported by Col. Itobt. Al
drich to beat McSweeney because
of the Governor's refusal to pardon
the wvliite bigamist. Pons, Col. Al
drich's client.
It is not credible that so small a
matter as a refusal to pardon a con
vict should have so great a result
a- this is alleged to have. It is
probable, though, that there is some
opposition to McSweeney on this
account. There have been several
determined and strong efforts to get
the Govern.or to pardon Pons, and
strong influences have been b)roulght
to bear on him to this end; but lie
has persistently refused, and we
understand has said positively that
Pons must scrve out his sentence,
which was really very light, consid
ering his offense..
Pons, if we remember correctly,
wvas a railroad contractor from Flor
ida, wh'lo mnarried a young lady of
character and standintg in Barnwell
County wvhile lie had a wife living.
The evidence was incontravertible,
and lhe pleaded guilty and was sen
tenced to imprisonment and( fine.
We forgot the time, but think it
was twvo, years. . It was certainly
under a huindred-, and any man whoi
gets less than a rope or life impris
onment for such an offense ought
to consider himself lucky.
Tlhe News is not advocating Mr.
McSweeney for Governor, but cheer
fully commends himi for his course
in the Pons matter. It certainly
ought not to lose him any v'otes in'
South Caroliua. In that respect he
has undoubtedly done his duty.
