Johin Gary Evants' adlnlnistrattiorn,
ho received a lettor from liss Ella
Willman, of Brooklyn, N. Y., a
). A. I., asking "if Emily Geiger's
grave was unairked; if so her chap
ter would see to having a stono 'put
ovsr it.'" Gov. Evans turned the
lItter over to Mrs. Clark Waring,
w to was thenl chapter regent. Sho
referred it to the Columbia chapter.
It t i%t promptly decided that the
South Carolina daughters here were
the proper ones to care for the grave
of this heroic girl. A conmuittee for
this purpose was appointed by the
regent, of which I was made chair
iman. Thlo idea of putting up ia mon
ument in the yard of tho capitol was
concolved, wit1h the work and mate
rial to be given by the State.
The former superintendent of the
ponitentiary was soon an41 he mai1do
promises far beyond his authority it
seotmed, promising "to put up the
monument in such style that neither
he nor the chapter would be ashamed
of the result."
With delight I reported this to the
chapter. A second interview took
place betwon the superintendent
amd myself when I was informed a
model would be absolutely necessary
before work could begin. ] [aving
no money to expend on a model like
the monument, I was at a standstill.
The chapter had adjourned sine dieo
rid the long summer in which the
work wars to go On stretched1 before
