The ringing out of several pistol ( shots on the main street of our city i Saturday night at about 8 30 o'clock caused great, excitement among ou" d people, many of whom rushed to the e scene to investigate the trouble. 2.i.. James A. Bradley and Mr. J. A. r Cook, two prominent young men of the city, got into a dispute which resulted : in a blow and finally the discharging of 7 their pistols at each other. Six or e eight shots were fired. They were standing in front of ard j near Mr. S. B. Jones's Store, and sev eral of the bullets are :mbedded in the i walls thereabout, as some wild shoot- t ing was done, and neither of the con- o batants hit. Mr. Lawson B. Kibler happened to r be passing just at the time the shoot- s ing began, and one of the balls struck d him in the foot. The ball entered the t side of h is foot and seemed to range up. The doctors have not been able to lo. a cate the ball as yet. Several of the b small bones in the foot are shattered, and the wound will give Mr. Kibler t considerable trouble and may make him a cripple for life. His many friends 1 hope, however, that in a few days he I will e;itirely recover from the wound and be as sound as ever. In the hands t of Drs. J. M. Kibler and W. G. Houseal he will want for no attention in the v medical line. It is simply miraculous that, in the g crowded condition of the streets at the time, several persons were not killed. The young men were before Mayor Mayer yesterday morning and plead I guilty to drawing a weapon with intent to injure another. They were fined $75 each or 30 days on the streets. 3oth of the young men have given 8 notice of appeal to the Circuit Court, on the grounds that the fine imposs, was excessive. C. L. The alarm of fire was sounded Satur day night about 8 o'clock, to which the fire department responded promptly, but the flames were extinguished with out the department throwing water. The cause of the fire was a defective few in the roof of the house of Mr. Cally McWbirter at the lower end of Main street. The damage was very light, as the flames gained little or no headway before they were extinguised. Zeigler Bro's Shoes for ladies re the best made. Jamieson. Mr. McWhlraer Hurt. Saturday night when the fire alarm was sounded, Mr. Cally McWhirter, whose house was on fire, was raised by means of a plank to the roof of the house and having no support on the steep roof, lie slipped and fell to the ground, a distance of seveyral.feet. He was con siderably bruised; but his many friends will be glad to know that he wag not, seriously hurt. Old goods don't suit our customers or make new-ones. This time it % ill be a game of base ballo n the college diamond tomorrow ifternoon, tt 4 o'clock, by players se lected from the business and professional men of the city-the fats and leans, or ;touts and slims. This will give mote autusement to the public than anything that could be Ihought of, and the prominence of the players will make the game the more in Leresting. All the stores and business houses of Lhe city will be closed, so as to give everybody a chance to see the game, as the list below will show. A small admission fee will be charged, he proceeds to go towards buying a tele icope for Newberry College, and this lhould be another inducement for every body to come out and help on this good ause. The Great Council of the Improved )rder of Red Men of South Carolina is a session in this city. The delegates began to arrive yoster ay, and early in the afternoon our treets were lined with visitors rearing as a distinguished badge the ed, white and blue. The afternoon was spent by the members of the committees of the local 'ribe riding and walking, taking in the ights of the city with the visiting rethreu, all of whom seemed to be en Dying their visit to Newberry. The Great Council was called to order u the Masonio and Pythian hall, by he great Sachem, John H. Steenken, f Charleston, this morning at 9 o'clock. All the delegates have not yet ar ived. Several more from different ections of the State are expected to .ay, and the meeting promises to be he largest ever held. Camne Near Doing a Fire. Saturday night about nine o'clock a lamp fell from a scantling where it had been customary to hang It in the collar of TV. E. Epting & Co.'s store and struck the ground floor where a lot of hay had been stored. In a few seconds tlle oil was running all over the floor ignitting the hay and it looked as if it would be a serious fire. Mr.- Epting, with his presence of mind, and the assistance of a few by-standers, went to work and put out the flames without sounding the alarm. The staple which had been fastened into the scantling had pulle4 out or broken, letting the lamp fall, which was a large one, holding nearly a gallon of oil. He was carrying a lot of horses over the river, the lead rope be ing wrapled around his hand, and as some of the animals became unruly the rope tore otT 'the thumb of his rightt hand. Dr. Wheeler cut the member off at the right place, and the hand is doing well.
