When this editor was a journeyman
printer, and much yciunger than he is
today, he spent, a year in the town (if
Newberry. The recollection of that
year is a sweet memory. It was the on
ly year that I ever s'ient away from
Abbeville County. Lcaving home in
1850 with the blessings and prayers of
a pious mother, I found good friends in
the new home to which I had gone, and
I l-'ved no man there more than Col
1 J. R. Letvell.
From my earliest infancy I have been
a zealous worker in behalf of tener -
ance, and because of my love for work
in the tempet,tnce cause, I was thrown
with Col. Leavell, where he was : lead -
er in 'he good work

and Col. Leavell was never absent from
the meetings a hich took place in the
evenings twice a month.
