Cot. John Roland Leavell died at hi
residence Tuesday afternoon at 6
o'clock, in the 80th year of his age, af
ter an illness of only a few days.
Col. Leavell was born in this county
near Jalapa, and with the exception of
a short while in his young manhood
that ho spont in the city of Charleston,
has lived in Nowberry-his li being
that of a noble,'Christian gentleman.
Col. Leavoll came to Newberry front
the county a young man and has been
proninontly idontitied with the religi
m ns, social and commeria l interests of
the c"t.y for himlf ceitury.
lie joined ti church early in life
tnd at the time of his death was serv
ing his church as Deacon-tho First
I3aptist church.
He hold public office in this county
before the war, and has since filled sev
>ral public positions with honor and
tlie confidence of the public.
He was a very prominent member of
the Baptist denomination and is well
known throughout this State and the
Southern church.
He has been conspicuous for his great
purity and nobility of character-al
ways endearing himself to the hearts
:)f young and o.ld alike.
le was one with Judge O'Noall
pro.minently identified with the tom
perance movement in ante-bellum days
tnd has since been a strcag advocate
)f this good cause. He was a man of
lovely character and gentle-always
%pproaohable, tiking kindly interest in
h..th young and old.
He was married in 1842 to Miss Eliza
beth Chalmers, daughter of Dr. A. W.
Chalmers, of near Jalapa. Was the
father of 16 children, 10 of whom sur
vive him-1 sons and 6 daughters.
His remains will be buried Saturday
morning at Bush lver church.
Col. Leavell was a man that will be
greatly missed--one who was much be
loved by the community.

a performance of any popular-price
company in this city--was packed and
janmed into every nook and corner of
the opera house last night for the open
ing performance of the Phil and Nettie
Peters Comedy Company.
The bill was Muggs' Landing, which
proved a pleasing one, particularly as
interpreted by the clever actors of thir
company.
Phil Peters, in the comedy role, that
of "SoldIer Judson,"' made the most
emp)hatic hit of the evening, closely
followecd in the estimation of the crowd
by Miss Nettle Peters as "'Little
Muggs," while WV. N. Hlammett, Peto
Seymour, Camn Bally and Miss Mackin
are each deserving of mention for the
capahle way in which their roles were
handled.
Trho specialties, and 'there were a
host of them, were of a high order and
kept the audience continually applaud
ing for more; duos, quart.ettes and cho
ruses by capable singers and comic
skits by specialty people who amused
proved a most acceptable innovation.
In truth, the Peters company Is the
best 10, 20 and 30 cent show that ever
visited Spartanburg and they will not
be apt to face a single empty seat dur

Long, long before the hour that had
been announced for the services to be
gin, the childre began to gather with
their beamnlug countenances and happy
hearts, and cro the hour had arrived
the church was well-nigh filled. Be
sides the t:hildron, a few visitors were
present, as were the different pastors
of the city.
The iBand of I lope was organized in
Newberry sixteen yers ago by Mrs. C.
Mower, a' 1 i:' now carried on through
the cffort of 1, s. Sopiti edus, with
the assist: ac (i f''w good ladies of ,
the city, an the gerosity of that
large-hearted and noble Christian gen
tleman, George S. Mower.
The exercis-.s were conducted Tues
day afternoon by the President, Mrs.
Ledus, the first number on the program
being a welcome song by the children.
The next number on the program was
the recitation in unison of the 14th
chapter of St. John.
Then followed a touching and appro
priate.prayer by Rev. L. F. William
son of the i'resbyterian church.
The next wa two very beautiful
songs: "When the roli is called up yon
dor," and ''Jesus, the loving Shep
herd.''
Mrs. Redus arose and said:
All of us like honor in this world,
particularly honor that we deserve.
We have this evening among our num
ber thirty-three who have not missed
a single time. You boys and girls
know something of what that means.
It means staying at home vacation
time and not going to grandmothers.
Then we have ten who have missed
only once. On this third honor roll we
have forty-one names. These have
made from fifty to ninety-five per cent.
Many of the names that I shall call on
this roll are those who have missed
only two or i;irec times. Most of them
have made 75 per cent. and over. I
said 50 per cent. just now, I should
have said from 75 to 95 per cent.
Mr. McClintook has promised to talk
to those who got prizes this evening.
We will now listen for a few moments
to him.

I understand you desire me to talk to
all those who gu' pwizes this evening.

girls. I congratulate you. You have
complied wi th the conditions. Some of
you have been here every time that the
bell has rung and others have been ab
sent only a very fNw times. It would
have been very much more pleasant
often times to have emained at home at
your ease. It would have been more
piensant to have gone somewhere else
than to this place. And the others, I
feel confident in stating in this pres
ence, would have been here if the cir
cumstances had not beent very extraor
diuary. Bhe has comp)lied with the
promise made at that time-a year ago.
I k'now that each one of you will appre
ciate the p)rize received.
There is something else than the ac
tual prize. You are marked in the
presence of all this goodly company.

All of the good peoplo0 in this town will

ization. And I see some men here that
are going to put it into the papers, and
your friends will all feel exquisite

more than you bargained for. You are
getting, not only your prize, but you
are getting yourself before this com
munity with the esteem of the best
people in this towen. You have stood
in the forefront the year round-the
whole twelve months-and yo'u have
put yourselves among the best in the
temperance organization. You ar-c get
ting more than you bat gained,.for. And
the only idea I want to suggest is a
very simple one. Fior twelve months
right along in this temrerance expe
rience-it is going to be that way just
as long as you live. Every one of you
prize boys and girls, if you want to be
among the best people in this world,
just:the experience you have had In
these twelve months-that Is the way
to go, and that is the way you have to
go if you want to go among the best
people in this world. There are going
to be good opp)ortunIities and occasions
to enjoy something else, and If you
yield to that you are not going to get
Iprizes. You must labor and you must
exercise self-denial, and if you do, just
as surely as the sun is shining out
there, you will get more than I prm-w
lee you this evening. I assure you
again you ar-c going to get plentiful
and abundant rewards for all that,labor
and all that self-denial.
