Neowberry went over to the college
yesterday morning and extended to
Presi.ent Cronr3' and the student body
the f-.aternal g.eetings of Furman anti
then gave the students an excellent
talk on literature. He gave them

warmly greeted.
Dr. A. J. S. Thiomas was also present
and conducted the religious exercises at
the college.

Miss Lelia Moses, of Sumter, who
has been visitiug relatives in the city,

Saturday.
The town tax beeks closed yesterday
with about one-third of the taxes paid.
There will, we suppose, bave to be a
short extension.

Russians and Germans witnessed the
meteoric display.

for Mayor and Aldermen.

Mr. L. I. Ept.ing has left a fully de
veloped ripe second-growth apple at
this oflice plucked from one of hiS trees
on his plantation in the county. It is a

Rev. Dr. S. T. Hallmau of Prosperity,
has moved into the house on Cline
street that has just been vacated by J.

Mr. Arthur Davis, who has a situa
tion in Chester, arrived home a few
days ago wih his left hand in a sling.
He had the misfortune to have the
forefinger of his left hand nearly cut olf
in a shaper.

Sudden De ath.
Miss Loule Workman, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Wor-kman, of
Laurens, but who live neat- the New
beriy line, died very suddenly at WIl
liamston Female College on last Satur
day night about 9:30 o'clock. She had
been indisposed for two or three days
but had not taken her bed and was
not thought serious. Death came sud
denly. She was we believe an only
child and a bright and happy young
girl. Mr. and Mrs. Workman have
many friends In this county who deep
ly symp)athlze with them itn this hour
of their sotrrow. The fit-st news they
trccoived of the dheath of their child was
t,he home coming of the corpse. There
was no way to telegraph.

leg , has been appointed a member of
the joint committee from the United
Confederate Veterans, the Daugh
ters of the Confederacy and the
United Sons of Confederate Veteran
to investigate historical text books in
use in South Carolina schools. Prof.
Wallace will make a valuable member
of the committee as he is an able his
torical scholar. The committee will
meet In Columbia in the near future.

Sunday night some young men from
Factoryville. had a carriage and horses
out driving when the horse9 becan
lrightened in some way and ran away.
They started somewhere about the
Graded school building and ran down
Coats street into Main street and a
they turned into Main smashed a part
of the carriage to pieces and threw the
occupants out. The teaml was making
for tee stables but nrssed up the side
walk and ran into Mr. Jack Summers
bicycle standing In front of Bleasem
hotel and smashed It to pieces. The~
ocoupants of the carriage were not
hurt.
