The i'xcrior Fire Company for
some time has been embarrassed with
t debt hanging over them of something
ver a hundred dlollars. The debt was
made for the put-pose of fitting up their
reading room and amusement parlor
rnd securing a uriform for the running
beam. The members have not come to
the citizens to beg for money to help
them out of their trouble, but one noble
hearted, liberal citizen stepped up un
solicited and relieved them of $25 of
the debt. The citizen who did this
was Mr'. Otto Klettner-a man who fot'
generosity and pubice spirit has no su
per'ior in Newberry, and one that if out'
town had many such would soon make
Newberry the leading city in the State.
It is an examp)le that others, who
doubtless are more able, might profit
to follow. It is commendable, and Mr.
Klettner has placed himself in many
other respects so near the fire laddies
that his name Is indellibly stamped on
their hear'ts. Would that Newberry
had more Klettners,

The Presbyterian Synod of South
Carolina will meet in the 'resbyternlu
church in this city on Tuesday evening
next at 7.30 o'clock. The opening ser
mon will be preached by Rev. A. A.
.J1ames, the retiring Moderator.
The business of the synod will b,3
transacted during the dlty, and it is ex
pected that there will be a preaching
bervice each night, commencing at 7.3o
o'clock. The 1inlt adjournment will
probably be on lrld ay night. The
public is cordially invited to all the
services, as the sessions are open to the
public.
l'iis Synod was organized in 18-15
withtabout seventy linisters, one hun
dred churches and less than ten thous
and members. It now hus 122 minis
ters, over 300 chl urches and 20 000 com
Ilunicants. The largest iembership,
according to white population, of any
of the Southern States.
'T'le synod met here about 22 years
ago. It is composed of many able men
atld leaders of thought in the I'resby
terian Church in the South, and their
coming to our city is an occasion of
much interest.
