(Atlanta Constitution, July 30.) At lest the foot of the mountain has been reached and the cool rock encircled spring, the dolicious breeze enchanting view refresh the tired traveler. Forgotten aro the tediousness of travel, the clot, eness of th sleepOr, the cinders and the noise. Forgot tQn that it is "the hottest day" of the year. Cast into oblivion are discom iituro and penetrating boat.. The eye it; so busy drinking in the changing panorama, the mind so occupied in registering now sensations that the parted lips are speechless 1. 3t the sound of human voice harmonizing not with nature's fairyland drive to hidden recesses the winged tribe that chant so cheerily a welcome. No wonder that the Indian, child of na ture, loved this land and framed his "hr ppy hunt ing grounds" after the pattern furnished by earth and hated deeply iho dispossessing palo-faced brother. Nature spoke to his uncul tivated mind and the woodland whis pers told of Gitichio Maniton, the mighty, the Father who had given unto his children a land rich in game and wealthy in beauty. But there is little time for reverie of the Indian or his simple worship. Old Vance, the colored Phaeton of our tlhreo seated surrey, knows that there are yet two hours of steady driving. Ho "geehes" to his horses, cracks his whip and assures us that the scenery is "more pow'fful lino" further up the mountam a. Wo men tally distrust his -words and then, when, as we turn the last curve and are on the mountain's crest and loho'' the heavens beautiful in the sunset after glow we mentally apolo gize. T1hien, too, thler-e is Glen Burney, with its irphashring, dashing, dancing waterfall arid its 1pobb)leaoping, frollicking rill, its rich rhiododendiron in bloom, its gal axes and1( pr-ofuso ferns. Ther on we push through the forest, pricueval and wind our way down the mountain about 200 foot and com face to face with the Rock House, a natural formation, such as the cliff dwellers or cave men might have cherished. Retracing our steps, wo turn to the loft where the road widens and follows the rug god oft-traversed path to the Blow ing Rock. This special rock projects toward the valloy. It receives its naVI from the wind which, when big' . rushes through the funnel shaped valley and returns twigs, handkerchiofs and even hats that are thrown valloyward. The Blowing Rock affords one of the e..ost commanding and pictur osquo views of the John valloy and is a favorite position for boholding the majestic and soul-entrancing ef fects of the slow descending sun. For fully thirty minutes after the great orb of day has sunk beyond the distant mountains the heavens are bright with offorvescont hues of the spectrum and the various shades, tints and colors. Then twilight falls and night creeps slowly up the mountain sides, and now behold! "The heavens do clare the glory of God." The voices of the woods are hushed. Earth lies cradled in the embrace of the moon's soft, mellow light. The luster of the courtiers of night's realm is dimmed by the brightness of its radiant, sweet, smiling queen. Clouds fugitive and clouds somber, clouds in stately procession drifting and clouds white as the now fallen snow feel her benign influence and in her presence wear the argent livery of gentle Luna's court. 'Tis all too beautiful to picture. Earth, heaven and climate hero vie for the apple of Paris, and fortunate t hoy to whom it is permitted to en joy this equal contest. Beautiful is the moon by night; genial the sun by day ; cool are the breezes that con tinually are astir, but most gracions (for the visitor, though not for the farmer) are the clouds that "Iloat in silence by" and shoot their liquid darts at lands more slowlv. More would I write, but where everything bears the stamp of the marvelous 'tis diflicult to specialize. To appreciate the wealth of this land its health-giving climate, its mysteri ons appeal to the host that is within us, its richness in all that goes to make complete a lovely over chang ing panornm, one must draw nigh and come under the fascination of its necromancy. Then will he 1bo influ enced as never before, not by "the beauty of holiness" perhaps, but by the spirit of holmness eternally taber nacled in the god-created beautiful. RaBnm DavoD M~Aix.
