This amend ment provides for IIn
appropriation for the preliminary
work. It is as follows:
To .enable the Secretary of war to
make a thorough examination andl(
report to Congress as th1e the numb)er
of Confederate cemeteries in the
United States and tho location thore
of, and the nuimhor of Confederate
soldiers buiried in others than Confed
erate cemieteies, with the location of
such cemeteries, with the view to as
certain the best method of caring for
the remioval, w.~hore p)ract ical or de
sirable, of Confederate dead from
lrivate cemeteries to stuch Con fed
erate comotor-ies, tihe stua of $ 10.000.
As the amiiendiment. explains on its
face, it provides simply for' paving
the way ' for the work. This is
probably all th,at will be0 done by
this Congress, but after the infor
mation has beeni ascertained it is
fuilly expected that the wvork will go
on, and that the gr'aves, esp)ecially in
distinctively Confederato c('motories,
will be cared for.
