See Mr. J. N. Martin. Mr. F. H. ,Dominick went over to Ninety-Six yesterday to attend to some law business. Mr. W. J. Ailler, of Company G, 2nd S. C. regiment, was home last week on a short furlough. The treaty of peace has been signed and our commissioners expect to be home for Christmas. Mr. Harry T. White was home on . short furlough last week. He has join ed a Texas regiment. Col. George Joh nstone attended court at Greenville last week as attorney in a very important case. Moseley Bros. at Prosperity announce another big reduction sale which will last until the first of January. There are just lots of pretty things at all the stores in Newberry for Christ k -as and they a'e selling cheap. Mr. S. E. Brown made a short visit to his old home in Newberry yesterday. He is now located in Greenville. There has been some sleet and snow at Savannah and the boys no doubt have been suffering from the cold. Don't forget the lecture by Dr. Steele on Saturday night for the benefitof the new Methodist church at the factory. Eduard Scholtz, the jeweler, has lots of pretty things for Christmas ;..esents. You should call at his store. Daniels & Co. will start their auction sale again on Wednesday night and hey will have a special auction on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock for the benefit of the ladies. The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Aid Society of the Lutheran church will be belq on Friday. after noon at 3.30 at the residence of Mrs. Dominick. The Southern Railway will sell tickets to college students from the 16tb to the 25th inclusive for one and one third regular fare for one way for the round trip good to return January 4 Messrs. Jno. U. Aull, J. J. Hentz and J. F. Miller have bought out D. Hipp at Pomaria and will continue the busi ness at the old stand. They re all active young men and we wiswr them abundant success. An important meeting of the No w berry Lodge Knights of Pyl- las will be held tonight. Several ranks will be conferred and the election of officers will take place. Every m:tnber is urged to be present. Mr. H. C. Bardin has not given un) the Newberry Hotel as has been stated in some of the papers. He is t'aveling ror an Augusta fitm, but is still doing business at "['he Newberry" and ex pects to be for some timne yet. Mower Co. say they have borne very nice things that are buitable for Christ mas presents and they have. You would then give something useful as well as orn"ment al if you bought your presents from them. Call and exam ine. Council has passed an ordinance against loating on the grounds of the public schools or the streets mround the grounds. It would be a good idea to stop laing all around town if It could be done, especially by those who make loaalng a business. Cob. Geo. Johnstone has offered his services free of charge to defend the maen arrested on account of the Phoe nix trouble and taken before the United States Court. It would be hard for them to find a better or more able counsel to defend them. Mrs. Ethe' Thomas, who contributed a number of very interesting artieles to The Herald and News and has for several years lived at the Newberry Cotton Mill has returned to her former home at Norwood, N. C. The Herald and News wishes her well and will be *glad to have her send some contribu tions from her North Carolipa home. Those of our subscribers who live out of the county would make the editor happy by sending us at least one year's subscription. If each one of you will 2o this as soon as you read this you will make many hearts happy. How many will do this? If you owe more than one year," we will not confi... you to one year's subscription. The weather indications are for snow and young America is jubilant. Willie Moseley spent Saturday an.d 'unduy at home and returned to Now. berry College Monday. Mr. S. S. Birgo is again in the t. business and the way the ties are com. ing in is wonderful to behold. It is an opportunity to work off lots of timber that would be burned in the new grounds and clearings. He has a con tract with the Southern railway for 12,000, and has already received about 3,000. Standing by a bicycle one day the past week a little pickaniny about 4 years old walked up to me and throw ing himself back demanded to know "whose boxackle dot," and to see the grin that overspread the face of the by standers when the discomilture of old man Kay was apparent. We could not take in boxackle and that seemed to amuse the crowd. Mr. A. P. Dominick having jurt re plenished his larder and was con ratu lating himself on the way he was go'ng to eat sausage, spare ribs, &c., as he retired one night last week, but while he was sweetly sleeping the rogue that prowleth at night scented the good things in this larder and straightway made his way for them, and not caring for bolts and bats proceeded to enter some other way. Mr. D. now mourns the loss of haekbonn, spare ribs, pud ding,, sausage, &c. He has not been able to locate the theives. Mrs. Green Mitchell has been on a visit !o her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Dominick, and will return home in a few weeks, accompanied by her son, who will make his first visit to his fu ture home at that time. Miss Estelle Todd, assistant teacher of the Lltt Mountain Graded school, apent from Friday till Sunday with Mrs. C. F. Lathan, of our city. She was accompanied by Misses Roberta and Marie Lathan. Rev. R. C. Boulware passed through our town last Monday on his way to conference at Greenwood. Mrs. B. is sponding the time with Mrs. Mayor of our town, till Mr. B's return. As we journey through life we meet with many very inusing incidents as well as those th,at are pathetic. On Thanksgiving mo*ning 9ld man Kay was Ialking to the little Kays about Thanksgiving and asked them if they knew what thanksgiving neant, when little Nell, 4 years old, said: ".1 know it means turkey.". We thought how many grown folks' ideas of the day never get higher than turkey on all the vital questions of life. They do not seem to realize the true idea of life, and now as we appoach the Christmas time let us realize the true meaning anid the good that has conme down to us from it. Let us get above the turkey idea and in the return oif this happy festival let us as men spend it in a be coming mnanner' and not get even lower thant the turkey idea as we have seen in times past. The dime reading last Friday night was very well attended and it was otn joyed by all who attended, .rho maile quartette brought down the house. Another one will be given some time in January and we will give programme of the same later.
