The final detailit will be arranged to
day. It was concluded to have the pic
ilo on the 19th of August. Our birth
day is on the 18th whetb we will be just
21 or a little over. Any time suits us
and we know the boys' and- girls will
arrange a pleasant occasion.
Mr. Jno. W. l1arhardt, who was re
cently on a visit to Lexington, proved
his olicieney as a fireman and incident,
ally demonstrated the eficiency of the
Neborry firemen by the manner in
which he managed a fire which oc
curred during his visit. The -"Lexing
ton Dispatch in speaking of the fire
says: "Mr. Jno. W. Edarhardt, New
berry's veteran fireman, being among
the first to reach the fire, did the prop
or thing at the proper time, and, with
others, succeeded in extinguishing the
fla,.tes before any damage was done."
It is understood that lIon. Gee. John
stone, of Newberry, who flied a condi
tional pledge as a candidate for Con
gross in the Third District, will enter
actively into the race. Mr. Johustono,
as is well known, represented the dis
trict, in Congress some years ago, and
his ability is recognized and admitted.
The other eandidate, besides Congress
man Latimer, Is Hon. Julius Is. Bloggs,
of Pickens, who is making things hum.
From now on with these three candi
dates, all of whom are good speakers
and excellent worlkers, the race in the
Third will be quite lively.- Greenville

On a little trip we recentiy enjoyed,
on the occasion of the I'ress Associa
tion, we met. some people other than
members of t,he association.
At Whitmirn a gentleman, a lady
and a little boy about two and a half
years old got, on the train. The lady
was decidedly good looking-well, so
were they all-and she looked like
somebody we knew, but we couldn't lo
cate her. She evidently thought she
knew ius, and resolved to remove what
little uncertainty was left. She came
to our seat and asked. "Isn't this Ml.
Bighanm" then said "Do you remem
ber Lula -Lathan?" Of course we re
metubered Lula I,athan--a little girl ti
to 8 years old whom we taught to spell
and read at Lowryvitle 12 to 14 years
ago, two-thirds of her life since. The
gentleman was her husband, M r. Mer"
chant, principal of the Whitmire
school. The little boy was her son.

The count,y eatupaign has opened.
The first meeting was hold atJalapa oil
Tiedty. Tihe ent.huslasim in these
meetings is not, as groat as it was a tow
years ago. The candidates for the
Legislature were present. and rehearsed
their speeces. For a litt,le while there
were several who listened to the
speeches, but soon th!el'4e who were pres
ent were standing around in groups
talking aind not paying any attention
to what the orators were saying. We
had intended to write a synopsis of the
speeches and print it., but there was so
little interest in hearing the speeches
themnselves, we concluded no one would
read a report if it were printed.
The candidates for the Legislature
we believo with one accord favor the
dispensary as the best mothod of hand
INg the liquor question.
Mr. Kibler is a prohibitionist, but
would favor the dispensary if the bevo
rage featuro wore removed. Mr. Blease,
Mr. Sale, Mr. Wyche, Mr. Hanks, Air.
Evans and t Mr. Dlickert all favor the
dispensary as it 14 now. So there is
very little to ehoosc from on the liquor
question.
Mr. Jouc3 was not present. Of course
his position is known. He is for prolhi
bition and will not favor the dispensary
under any modifications.
The speeches wore all very good and
delivered with more or icss vii, but It
must be a very ditlicult matter to speak
to an audience that is paying very little
attention to what you say.
The candidates are all on good terms
and the best of good will prevails.
We 1o not wish to be understood to
say or intimate that the people of this
section are indifferent, to the best in
terests of their State and county or
that they were in the slightest degree
discourteous to the speacers, but they
have about made up their minds how
they will vote and are not interested in
speeches.
If their minds are not made up they
will select those who, in their judg
menit, are tiO best men when the time
comtes and cast, their ballot:s. That is
the way to do any way. Lets vote for
men for a season and if you get t.ie
right kind of men you will get the
right kind of measures. We will be
fore the campaign is over give a synop
sis of the speeches as fully as our space
will permit so that the vot.er who does
not listen at the speeches may sit down
and read what position4' are taken by
the candidates on tihe questions being
disussed.
Chairman Hardy was present and in
troduced the speakers and read the list
of those who had complied with the re
quirenents of the party and signed the
pledge and paid t.he assessntent.s. All

per.
Air. Boyd has no opposition for re
election as County Treasurer and Mr.

vate residences of the citizens of New
berry. They should come over to Now
berry on Saturday and hear som good
