part of the negroes, their aidors, abet
tors and backers would have to cease,
and that pretty soon, and some were
uost emphatie in making these asser
tions.
Tihe trouble seems to have grown out
of the fact, that a colored doctor had
sometime since been imported into that,
comultinity, it is claimed, for the pur
posOe' eventually running t,he present
whIte practicing physician out of that,
sectioi-that is by taking all the negro
praettce from hin, and injuring his
business to that extent.
We woro informed that at first the
negro doetor was very politc to every
one, but soon the medicine lie was ad
ninistering to some of his patients he
gan to have a had effeet, aund the negro
appeared insolent. The citizens at,
Vaughanvillc cliaim that, he told some
of the negroes that they were working
too hard and would have to stop (n-ing
s,he summer months or they would kill
themselves working for white people.
This put the citizens of the commu
nity to in 'estigating, andi they soonl
found that the negro doctor had no li
cnso to practice medicune and was vio
lating a State law.
A warrant was sworn out and the ne
gro doctor was arrested at Cross Ilill,
in Laurens County, on Priday, June
21th. The negro asked the constable
to carry him to Mr. l'hil Konn's store
at Vaughanville and he would produce
the license, which the constable did.
On arriving at the stare, the negro
was allowed to alight, as did the con
stable. The constable, MIr. J ack Spear
man, was called aside by Magistrate
Day for it colversation, when the doe
tor, accompaniied by another negro with
a shotgun, got in his buggy and drove
off.
It is stated by t,he const,able that,
within a Very short time t,went,y-ive
or t.hi'ty negroes appeared on the serne
armed ind ready to iotect the negro
doctor. The constable seeing that he
was overpowered left, the scene and
placed the warrant in the hands of the
Sheriff of Laurens County.
On Tuesday of last week Sheriff Me
Cravy, of Laurens, with a posse of eight
men, went to Vaughanville to scarch
for the negrro doctor and arrest,i. him,
hut lhe could not be fouud.

by reliable persons, that the negroes
could be seen assembling in the wvoods
