Knights of Pythlas.
The Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias
will convene In Nowberry this week,
the first session being held qn Thurs.
day morning at* 10 o'clock in the Now
berry Lodge.
There will be from 150 to 200 dele
gates and visitors present during the
session.
We extend them a hearty welcome
and feel sure that the Knights and citi
zens ofNewberry will do all in their pow
or to make the meeting a most delightful
one. Some of the oflicors of the Grand
Lodge will arrive today.
On Friday night the banquet will be
spread and served by the ladies of the
Methodist church. The floor will be
put down over the -seats in the opera
house and the banquet served there.

Mr. J. E. Cooper, of Winchester,
Va., who was in attendance upon Synod
is one of the substantial laymen of the
Lutheran church in the South.
Rev. Y. V. A. Riser left yesterday
for sumter, where he has accepted the
pastorship of the Lutheran church.
We wish him abundant success and
commend him to the good people of
Sumter of all denominations.
A game of base ball was played on
the diamond at the college on last Fri
day afternoon bet veen the nines of New
berryand Clinton, which resulted in a
victory for Newberry, the score stand
ing 9 to 0.. Mk. D. L. Copeland acted
as umpire.
The merchants of Newberry have
decided to inaugurate the early closing
and yesterday most of the stores were
closed at 0 o'clock and the rest at half
past six. This will he kept up until the
first of September except on Saturday
and the boys will have a little time they
can call their own.

ling mierry comnedy, "What Shall We
do with Her?" will be presented by the
ladies and gentlemen who so success
fully played "The Midnight Fire"
about four months ago. The cast will
also be angmented by the addition of

Thomas Addison, formerly editor of
the Coluinbik Register andt author of
