THE PrOHI11TION MOVEMENT.
While we agro with the position
that the constitution of the Democrat,ic
party Inhibits a caididato from becom
ing the candidate of any faction and
being voted for in the Democratic pri
mary as such candidate, yet, wo would
like to see the prohibitionists have a
candidate and let tihe sentiment of the
pcoplI3 be tested on this point.. Putting
a separate box in which the peoplc may
voto for or against prohibition will not
amount to anlything and tle vote in
such box will be no test, of the svnti
mont of the people on this questioni.
But to our mind, and the only Inter
pretation we can see to be given the
provision of the constitution of the par
ty, if tbe prohilbitionists hold aconven
tion and nominate a ticket, thatt me
mont they rule themselves out of the
Democratic primttry, because that, mo
nuillt, the candidates on that ticket be
como the candidt tes of a faction pub
licly expressed.
That provision was put into the con
stitution to avoid March conventions of
factions of tbe p, oty or any otlie con
ventions.
Tihe piimary was meant to do away
with factional nominations an( allow
Overy man a free and open flel before
the Democratic voters of the State.

clause that it is )art of the ledge.

It says plainly that "he is not" now
the candidate of any faction. A inman
who receives the nomination of it pro

of the prohibition faction.
