Miss Olive Tarrant, who has been visiting her uncle, Rev. Hayne Leavell, in Houston, Texas, has returned to Newberry. The County Cotton Growers' Associ ation will meet next Monday at I o'clock. Delegates from every town ship should be present. Col. Purcell has begun the orection of cottage No. 2 on Purcell Row in "Brooklyn." He proposes to build five on the row, which will be quite an ad dition to Ward 1. Mr. E. Y. Morris who has been in business in Augusta has returned to Newberry and opened an o. p. house at hik old stand on Law Range. He is agent of E. J. O'Conner. Messrs. T. 11. Chalmers and J. N. Johnstone, of this county, have boen drawn as grand jurors for the April term of the United States Court, which will convene in Charleston on April 4th next. Davidson's Superb Scenic Surprise, 'Old Farmer Hopkin,'will be presented in the opera house Monday, March 7th. This company comei well recommend ed to the public and deserves a full house. Cromer left on Wednesday for Washington with proof to refute the charges' made by p6rsons opposing the bill appropriating $15, 000 to Newberry College for daniages done the building by Union soldiers just after the war. The contest for the Nowbotry post offico continues without abatement. All foui'applicants,namely, J.R. David son, the present incumbent,; J. S.'aus sell, W. Y. Fair,,and R.,E. Williams, are on the ground and aredillgently at work. Mr. Davidson, an appointee of Cleveland, but who, in consequence of*the currency question, joined the republican party at the last elcelo-n, is actively -aided by staunch friends, notably, Mr. L. W. C. Blalock-a whole team by himself--and others. Col. W. Y. Fair is entirely competent and, of course, is admirably endorsed. Ile. too, it seems, became a republican at the same time and for the same reason that Mr Davidson did. Mr. J. S. Russell is an elderly gen tlemen, a charter member of the G. 0. P. and has numerous.endorsemnnts. R. E. Williams--"Bob Dick" Williams is his nickname-is a colored man, who was born and bred- in that county and has been more or less acttvo in rip publican politics for a quarter of a con tury. He was county auditor for that county for four years during republican supreiacy-from 1873 to 1877-and lilled it acceptably. Foe many years he has been a inmber of the state rc publican executive cowmittee. Aside fromi the endorsement of the people in Newberry, he has testimonials regarJ ing his capacity and character fromi the business people there who, for obvious reasons, could not, afl'ord to endorso a colored man for the oflice over white competitors. . But he .is actively en dorsed by the stato reptiblican execu tivo committee, of wh ich Rt R. Tolbert is chairman, and E. A. Wehster, na tional con mi Ittetman from the stat, who, it seems is "monarch of all he surveys" in relation to postmasters in Sout.h Carolina. On bcing asked re garding the outlook -today lie stated that while lie was very desirous of be ing postmaster, yet he did not wish it, nor would he accept it, if he thought there would ,be. sorious opposition to him on the part of the white people there, with whom'his whole life had been spent. He said that at least two of his competitors had proposed to him that if lie would withdraw in their favor they would have him for chief assistant. But he said that he could see no consistency in that, because a he said, If a colored postmaster would be obnoxious to . the people there a colortd assistant would be equally so. He further said that if party services were worth anything he was entitled to the omee whether he got it or not, and that,)if he failed he would not comnplain. He also said L,hat lie had promised his democratic friends there, who are in. business that, if aipointed, he would employ the most competent and least objectionable help in that town to aid -in conducting the ofice. -Washington cor'. Mr. Latimer presented afldavits showing that the title to the college is in tbe Lutheran Synod of South Carolina, as has been claimed by Mr. Latimeor. "South Carolina Day" was what the members of thu Southern Club of the Woman's College called their, meeting yesterday afternoon. It was hold in Miss Annadora Baer's rooms, in Irving Hall, and was in chargo of tho South Caro lina members, Misses Baer, Mildred Dean, Mary Helen Mower and Bossi Louise Gilder. The South Carolina flag hung on tho wall and bunches of hyacintha, jon quills and violots from the "Palmetto State" woro used effectively. Each guest was presented with a sheaf of rice, to which was attached red, whito and grey ribbons, the club colors. Airs. Noilson Poo, Mrs. Hughes and Miss Nannie Wilson were guests of the club. Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Poo talked en tertainingly of the South, and told some delightful war stories. A pleasant part of the afternoon was a game of anagrams, in which the lot. tere composing the name "South Caro lina" were used to forim other words.
