bowlders are worn simooth whore the
nountains of iceo and sand passod over

ill pointing castward and showing
which way the glacital deposits drifted.
There is tho ovidenco. muto, but indis
puitablo.
To tho careful observer there are
nunmborless other evidences of the pres
enco of glacial influences in the past,
but nono is moro convincing than the
trainp bowlder that has finally settled
down in the woods in tho heart of EU
glowood borough. Thero it sits, a tow
ering aass of rock weighing perhaps
200 tonls and resting upon three points
which in themselves find a purchaso on
a flat rock that is part of and common
to tho ohracter of rock which composes
the palisades. But, strangely enough
an1d to the wonderment of geologists,
the tranip bowlder is red sandlstono froin
the Jorsey hills 25 niles inland, and
the podestal is motaiorphito or soft
granito.
Around this marvelous monument I
havo grown trees that maty perhaps be
a century old, a:<l they havo completoly
hedged it ill, whilo the rock itself ha
stood whero it stands today for thou
sands of years. On the pedestal or that
part of it which is protected from the
action of the olomont can be soon the
deep ridges and scars nado across its
flat surfaco by the great grinding pres
suro of the budy of ice and sand that
passed over it emunvless yorns nu-1 when,
Now York was ico and snow clad and
the world was a desolato waste in a
stato of chaos.
This trainp bowlder has caused geol
ogists much wonderient and is regard
ed todtay ats oneo of the finest Specinions
over left ill tio wako of a glacier. It iS
equally astounding a.s though an oxplor
er should find tho hull of a steamboat i)
the Saihatra lesert. The only way it could
get thero wild bo through som1o great
convulsion that had landed it from the
i,.. in the heart of the inland sands.
