Newberry last year to go into business
in Augusta, has returned to Newberry

Tho New Offleers.
The new council met on Friday after
noon last at 4 o'clock according to pre
vious announcement, for the purpose of
electing subordinate officers for the
year 1898. T'e result-while there are
some changes -is that most of the old
oflicers hold over.
On the election of a Clerk and Treas
urer for the city there was a deadlock,
which necessitated a recess until the
12th instant, at which time the elec
tion will be decided and declared.
Mr. H. C. Hunter, the present efi
cient and popular Health Ofileer, was
elected Chief of Police. Mr. Hunter's
election was a high compliment as he
was not an applicant for the position.
He has asked for a few' days in which
to consider whether or not he will ac
cept.
Messrs. H-. H. Franklin, E. P. Brad
loy and S. (. Carter were. elected
policemen. Messrs. Franklin and
Bradley hold over and Mr. Carter is a
new man.
At a previous meeting of the council
it was decided to have only ono Street
Overseer and Mr. L. D. Wicker was
the successful applicant for this posi
tion.
. Messrs. Hunt & Hunt were elected
City Attorneys.
Rial Bates, colored, was elected
Lamplighter and Janitor.
There were something over forty ap
plicants for the different positions.

Alderman Lane to Wed.
Tho following local appeared in the
Philadelphia Times of August 25th
last:
"The engagement is announced of
Miss Florence E. Todd to James Jeffer
son Lane of Newberry, S. C.".
Very few of Alderman Lane's friends
in Newberry knew anything of the ap
proaching wedding.
He left on Saturday for Philadelphia
and when he returns he will be accom
panied by Mrs. Lane.
Mr. Lane's numerous friends in New
berry will extend a hearty welcome to
Mrs. Lane. The Herald and News ex
tends congratulations and best wishes.
The Emancipation ProotamatIon.elebra
tion Day.
The emancipation celebration by the
colored people of our city was hold in
the court, house on Saturday last. There
was a large number of colored citizens
in attendance. The exercises consisted
of singing, prayer by Rev. Kinard, and
the Emancipation Proclamation was
read by Rev. Wright, of the Presbyte
rian church.
Rev. E. .11. Colt, pastor of Millor
Chapel A. M. E. Church, assigned to
this church after the death of Rev.
Washington, was-:introduced as-orator
of the day. He took -for his subject,
"Our citizenship and its responsibili
ties." His address was replete with
timely advice to the colored population
-stating that lawlessness must cease
among them as a race; that the- taking
of human life was too common; economy
must be practiced, and property must
be accumulated, and there must be
more respect for womanhood in order
to maintain the standard of citizenship
desired. His closing remarks were con
corning the State College at Orange
burg-an institution for which his race
was thankful.
Silver Street Dots.
A fire at W. W. Spearman's about
5 o'clock this morning. The buggy
house was found in a blaze*beyond con
trol, and Dr. Longshore had his stables
attached to buggy house and lost his
fine mare And the other one badly
burned on one side. Mr. Spearman
lost his fine carriage, carriage harness,
buggy and harness, about $50 worth of
wagon harness. The fire was a torch
we suppose by an enemy unknown. A
reward will be offered for him.

Street. The young people are having
a fine Christ,mas.
The farmers are already turning
stubble making ready for the next 5
cents cotto,!.

Miss Willie, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. W. P. Cassels, was married3to
Mr. Thomas West Gary of Barto,
Fla. The young couple came to
Columbia after the wedding, remain
ing here till 1 :50 o'clock this morn
ing, when they left via the Florida
Central and Peninsular - for their
future bomne in the land of flowers.

plishied young lady. The groom,
though a young man, is a professor
in the South Florida Institute at
Barto. He is related to the well
known Gary family of this State.

berry County, and perhaps the last one
in the Slate, to become an elector under
the understanding clause, registering a
few minutes before 3 o'clock Saturday
afternoon.
The term of the present Supervisors
of Rogistrotion doesn't expire until
February first, but the law provides
that they shall not register electors af
ter January 1, 1898. So there is no reg
istration on the fIrstIMonday in Janu
ary and on Tuesday and Wednesday fol
lowing. There is an incongruity on the
first Monday in-January and on Tues
day and Wednesday following. Thers
is an incongruity in the Registration
Act, it requiring registration those
three days in every month.
