Newberry College Ieunilon at Elloree.
I had the pleasure last week of at
tending a Nowberry College reunion at,
illoree, in Orangeburg Count.y. These
reunions of the college are becoming
Important foatures, and are resulting
in good not only to the collogo, but to
the cause of education.
When my friend, Col. J. 1B. O'N.
Holloway, was in Newberry to attend
the commencement, I gavo him the
promise to be at the college reunion in
Orangoburg. I could not help feeling.
however, when I started that it was
very presumptuous in me to ride over a
hundred miles to try to talk for fifteen
or twenty minutes to an intelligent Or
angeburg audienco, and my presence
there was not on account of what I had
to say, but ratber to show my interest
in Newberry College and universal edu
cation.
It was an appreciative audience.
Tihe church was full and the people
scomed to take a great interest in the
college and the cause of education. It
was an appreciative audience. The
peopl of Orangiburg are noted for
their hospitality, antd this olcasion was
no oxception. Th(y somed glad to
see us, and wo soon felt at home and
really glad that we had gone. Hereto
fore Col. Holloway had had somo
trouble In getting speakers, but otthis
particular occasion he had a ponderous
programme so far as numbers were
concerned. I had been to tills part of
Orangeburg before, and it was pleasant
to renew old acquaintances.
These reunions serve to keep the
college before the people, and they
arouse t iew interest ill the cause of
edueatioi. We have had a number of
young mIen from this section at New
berry College, and by the liberality of
a good woman of that 0ommunity was
the foundation laid for tile building of
the science hall at the college, and the
building bcers her name-Keller Mcm
orial.
The exerciscs were held in the Lu
tLherym nurch at Ellorec. it is a very
neat fiame building and is nicely fur
nish '. It is crl--d by Pastor S. I*.
Nease; P graduate of Newberry College,
and on time a pastor at Ott-le Moun
tain, in this county. It will 1 i pleits
ure to his friends to know thIt he is
getting along nicely il his worl, al is
much beloved by his )e)ple,
The addreissof welcome was delivered
by Dr. Albert Browning, and it wits a
chaste and beautiful talk and nicely de
livered.
The response was made by Mr. Y. V.
A. Riser inl fitting terms. Mr. 1jiser is
now serving the St. Matthew's chmrge
during the vacation of Rev, Wyse.
Mr. Riser is a Saluda boy and a student
in the Seminary at Newberry.
Mr. J. W. Swittenberg then dc
livered in a forcible manner an address
that was full of meat. He is a New
berry boy, and we were proud of
him.
The next talk was by the writer.
Col. J. B. Wingard, of Lexington,
followed in a strong and beautiful
address.
Thei came the announcement that
two hours wvould be 'aken for dinner',
andl such1 a (dinner' only the Orangeburg
p)eople know how to prepare. It, was
enjoyed and we forgot, the weather was
hot. Everything you could think of or
desire was there.
A fter dinner there was more speak
ing. Prof. 1F. B. Setzier, another New
berry boy, spoke flest and deli"ocd a
strong and well prepared speech.
After this followed President Cro
mer~ in one of Ils characterist,ic speech
es, and suoh a one as only Cromer can
make. It was a powerful plea for ediu
cation and for Newberry College.
Strong, convincing, unanswerable. I
feel sure it resulted in good, and if
there had been nothing else on the
pro'grammitfe it wvould have relpaid the
audience simpijly to have heard Cromer.
The reader will perceive that New
berry p)layed an impiortant part in the
Orangeburg meeting.
Prof. C. L. T,. Fisher wvas invited to
speak for Elizabeth College, which he
did briefly.
Col. [Holloway was re-elected presi
dent; C. J. Rast, secretary, and Rev.
S. Lh. Nease, treasurer, and the meet
ing adjourned.
My friend Holloway Lakes a lively in
tcrest in Newberry College, and was
happy last Friday at the success of tihe
Elloree meet,ing. lie makes a good1
presiding ofiicer, and I spent Friday
night with him, and am glad to see he
is gett, ing along niiely. lIeI will teach
school during the next, school year.
I met another Newherry iimn-Mr.
J1. IH. HIippl-who hais taken up his
abode wit,h the good people1 of Oranmge
burg and is pr'osperi ng.
In fact,, It was a deolighItful meeting,
and1 I was glad I hald the pleasutre of at
tend(1ing, whiethter what. I said was
worth saying or not.
The rop)s mare fine, and t,he cotton is
bleginning to open. Mr. Guts Summer,
who was dlown there on a visit, could(
not, get through talking about them.
These r'euins are good t,h ings from
