Mr. Neely is one of the largest contractors in our State, and will put in a bid for pl'acin sewerage in Spartanburg. We know him of old and can heartily endorse and recommend him. As to our friend Evans, lie once lived in Spartanburg, and the name of his -friends is legioni., The freedom of the city was tendered him by 1Mayor Calvert, who told our thrice welcome guest that if the town didn't suit him just to tear it down and rebuild to his tastc.-Piedmont Head light. ________ Marvelous nesults. Johostone has gone to Sa luda to attend court in~session there this week. He has been employed in the defense of the Hendersons, who are on trial for murder. Mr. Ed. Stone lost his. buggy in Newberry last Saturday. Ho left it in the yard at the blacksmith shop of Elijah Philips, and wheni he went to got it the buggy was gone. The Senior class at Newberry Col lege finishad their final examinations on Friday and the honors will be an nounced this week and subjects for graduating speeches assigned. Supervisor T. G. Williams has fin ished the registration of the voters of Helena and h finds only 28 names on his books. A good many did not regis tor as there was no opposition tickets. The first municipal election in the town of Helena takes place to-day. The ticket as nominuated has already been ptublished in The herald and News. There being no op,losition the vote will be light. The members of the First Baptist church at Newboerry gave their pastor, Rev. Gee. A. Wright, and his family a most delightful and valuable pounding on Saturday evening. The gifts were valuable and useful and are very much appr-eciated by the recipients. T1here wer-o thirteen applicants for teachers' certificates before the county board on last Firidlay a week ago-six white an(l seven color-ed. Greneker-, the pop) uIar conductor of the South Carolina and Georgia railroad, paid his mother a visit last wce, on the eve of his de p)artur-e for Los Angeles, Cal., wvit,h the Grand Division, Order of Railway Con ductors, of which lie is a member. They leave Atlanta to-day and will re turn on th,e 2nd of June. Mr. J. R. Voss is in Newberry, S. C., wvhero he is working for contractor Howard Necly, who is constructing a system of water works in that city. Mr. Voss is an expert mechanic and has had many years of experience in that spe cial line of work. Capt. 0. L. Schumpert, chairman of committee on death of Comrade B. H. Lovelace, read the following report of committee and moved Its adoption, which was seconded by Rev. E. P. Mc Clintock and C. F. Boyd. Report adopted. BERRYMAN HICKS LOVELACE Was born in Cleveland County, Stat, of North Carolina, on the 14th day of November, 1830, and in 1853 he moved to Newberry, S. C., where he was on gaged in the mercantile bu'siness until the commencement of the war between the States. In -, 1861, he joined the "Quitman Rifles," which was after ward Comj.any "E" of Third Regiment, Kershaw's Brigade, McLaws' Division, Longstreet's Corps, army of Northern Virginia. In this command he served till the battle of Chictcamauga, when he was seriously wounded in the face, the ball breaking both jaw-bonos and cutting off a part of his tongue. This wound disabled him from service, and always afterward caused an impedi mcnt in his speech. After the close of the war he again entered into the mer cantile business at 'Newberry, S. C., where he resided till the day of his death, which occurred - January, 1897. Berryman H. Lovelace was a true and- gallant soldier, an upright, honest citizen, an affectiovate husband and father, and a consistent member of the Lutheran Church; therefore, Resolved, That our Camp has lost a faithful comrade, and our community and State a citizen true to her every interests, and always ready to respond to the calls of duty. Resolved, further, That this proceed ing in respect to his memory be in scribed in the minutes of our Camp, and that a copy be sent as an evidence of our sincere sympathy to the family of our deceased comrade. And Resolved, further, That a copy of these resolutions be offered for pub lication to our county papers. 0. L. SCHUMPERT, For Committeo. M4. A. Carlisle, from committee on death of Comrade S. P. Epting would furnish a first class barbecue dinner at 35c per head, and Mr. E~pting is also to clean off the grounds, erect speaker's stand and clean out well.
