TIlE NA8HVILLE TRIP.
We desiro to say to the editors that
all railroad arrangements for the trip
to Nashville to the Tennessee Centen
nial have bColn practically completed.
The editor of The Herald and Nows
has been in correspondence with Mr.
T. J. Anderson, of the Soaboard Air
Line, and has arranged for transporta
tion from Clinton to Atlanta over that
line, and Mr. Childs, of the Columbia,
Newborry and Laurons, has kindly con
sented to handle us from Newborry to
Clinton.
Last week we went over to Atlanta
to have a personal interview with Mr.
C. E. Harman, general passenger agent
of the Western and Atlantic, and we
found hin very pleasant and willing to
handle us from Atlanta to Nashville.
Tihe conditions and full information
will be given very soon as to details
and probable cost of the trip.
A atopl at Chattanooga will be ar
ranged and also a trip to Lookout Moun
tali and the historic battle ground.
We feel sure this will be 0110 Of the
leasantest. trips the association has
ever been tendered and will be made at
Very smal111 cost..
We only say this much so that tile
members may begin to arrange to go
with us. We wanlt a full attoldaleo at
Nowberry and also oil the trip.
We will go over to Nashville inl the
nlext two week and arranlgo all detailu

most delightfl trip.

Itom,
Kay Replies to chips.
Well, Chips, you took advantage of
my absence while I was pirooting
and 8ashaying in Atlanta to Jump on
me with both foot, but I think I will
survive the jumping. I will answer
your last question first-the one in re
gard to the dispensary. I have never
said (and tievor will) that the dispensa
ry is a good thing for Newberry, and
iy advocacy of the dispensary was for
such as just, will have liquor sold as
over against our old barroom system.
If we muist have the one or the other
give mne the dispensary for reasons too
numerous to mention every time. Now,
I don't think Prosperity is obliged to
have liquor. She has been without the
legal tiaflc in evil for sixteen years,
and have our good poopl been mistaken
so long and just now found it out. We
think not, and in regard to the remark
that we will have liquor sold here any
way that all depends on whether the
constable gets the keg or not,.
I will go further and say that noman
known for his devotion to his church,
an(I who is opposed to this illicit trailc
can buy a drink of liquor frot a blind
tiger. We doubt Chips if you could
buy one here. I know there is a good
deal of talk about tho sale of whiskey
here by some people and you ask them
if they have seen it sold or bought any
and their reply is, "oh no, but, I am
told so," and if you ask them if they
will make an aflidavit to the fact that
it is being sold they toll you vory quick
ly that it is none of their business to
make allidavits, etc. How easy it is to
find fault wit 11 existing conditions, but
how hard to take the load in improv
lng, especially when we have such men
as you are, Chips. A pillar in the
church advocating the sale of that
-still that sets oin fire the soul and cauls
es thousands to ill drunkards graves
every year. Take my advice, Chips,
read your "Way of Salvation" again,
and in future on all questions of ior
als and evils take the position on these
questions just as you pray, aid my
word for it you will never be found ad
vocating such Lvls as liquor solling
and then vote as you pray, and the
good work will be accomplished.
No, Chips, I did not get ashy at you,
old boy, for I lCnow those who give
must take. I know full well ''that a
little nonesenso now and then is relish
ed by the wisest, men." I fear that we
have had So much s10e1n0110 all the
time that the long suflering readers of
The Herald and News are tired, and I
promise them that with this letter I
will stop all this nonsense (unless you
jump on ma again) and try and give
theml the nelws. I further promise that
there is going to be no trouble between
us, for goodness knows if you or I were
to get our faces the least, bit disfigured
we would be a sight to see. A knock
out blow about thu face would "fix" us
and we would indeed be Ilrty.
The idea of your going to those so
clals jt.t to please the childrei, and
an(] you a "grandpap." You can't fool
Kay nor anybody else so far as that
goes. You are like the parents who
go t.o the circus just to take the chil
(ren. Now, grand pap, you should
quit trying to p)alm yourself off as a
young man and stay at home excep)t
wvhen away on oflcial busiuess(?)
Yes, Mrs. Kay remembers the tine
when you andl she wvent to the same
school, and what a good little boy you
were and how smuart, and good looking
youi were, and she says you have im
p)roved as you have g.rown older. T1he
idea, but then she feels kindly towards
you, old boy, for coming to liar rescue
so nobly' and explosing 01(d man Kay and
his running off, and she is in hope)s
that you will catch up) with emorn of his
gamnes and give the whole. ca away. I
havent lived with her for seventeen
years not to be able to read her writ
lng. I hereby extend an invitation to
you to go with me on my13 next jaunt up
into North Carolina among the meun
talns where Sal calls on her friends to
hold( her roasted p)otato while she
''dances wvith the man with store
boumght clothes on1." I will p)romise you
seome mighty good rations, and judging
from the way you hid rations on the 9th
of last March you aro prietty good on
You ought not to show m11 up so,
Chips. D)oes your Book tell you to do
this about a friend? Readl it aguin and
see if it is in keeping with it andl the
lesson y'ou would teach mec. In the
language of this same grand 01ld Book
I would say to yeou: Cease to do evil,
learn to do wvell, and only tell about
your friends what you would hkaic to
have told on you.
I am now dlone with the suibject and
imagine I can hear many amens.
Come out to see mue, old boy, I will
be at home for a wveek.
Maniy thanks, Mr. ICditor for the
picture of the group of The Herald and
News 1p0n pushers, and I must say' that
it is a fine one-barring Chips and1( 11e.
The loaet Kay in our flock has learned
to name many of therm. She says there
is Chips, old man Kay, Gosh Trrumnps,

Justice Says the Ferry at Ashford's Needs
Attention from the Supervisors of
Newberry and Fairfield.
Why will not the Supervisors of
Newberry and Fairflold Counties listen
to words of warning before too -late.
Time and agaiv have their attention
been drawn to the condition of affairs at
Ash ford's Ferry. For te last two yoars,
matters went along smoothly, and no
complaint, but since the beginning of
this year thera has boon nothing but
complaint after complaint, but to no
pturpose.
The contract to attend to the forry
was lot out to the lowest bider without
any question as to qualification (one of
the most necessary considerations) and
given to a Mr. Ladd, who know noth
ing whater about a ferry. I would he
safe in saying he had never put a flat
over the river in his life before getting
the contract. Then he employs a deaf
negro, "deaf as a post," and a boy at
that, who know as little as Mr. Ladd
about a ferry, as ferryman. Now, those
are the parties whom1 the people of the
surrounding country must rely for
safety and protection in crossing the
river, and in whose hands their lives,
the lives of their woien and helpless
children aro entrust-d.
Those living at a tdistance from riv
era, and having little occasion to cross,
little know what risks and dangers
they encounter while crossing streams
with inexperienced hands. They gen
erally trust, without, question, the
judgment of those in charge. There
is a great responsibility resting upon
the Supervisors, and they should see to
it that none but officient and expe
rienced ferrymnen should attend to the
various crossings. Better close up the
road entirely than run such risks with
the lives of the helpless.
Aside from the dangers, there is lit
tle or no accommodation. In the spring
during rains spells when farmers can
not Plow they wish to haul their guanos
and other supplies. With a good steel
wire and magniileient flat, such Its they
have at Ashford, with an experienced
ferrymuan, the river could be crossed III
most at any time wh ile the river remains
in the banke. But as it is if the river is
the least swollen the ferryman claims
he can't manage the Ilat, antid parties are
frequently turned back, a distance of
six or eight miles, or have to wait
hours upon hours for the fall of the
river.
Then, when Mr. Ladd has occasion
to 1)0 absent from his store, the negro
will loave too, or being deaf cannot
hear the call, consequently the parties
wishing to cross niust either await Mr.
Ladd's return or not cross. This, ott
one occasion, the writer knew to be a
fact, and why is all this thus? Are the
counties too p)o to employ a good and
experienced ferrynman? or can they not
be had? Good ferrynan, like experts
aLt all other t,rades, come high. The
numbers are few, it is true enough, but
a real ferryiman should be employed or
else none. Tie counties Ior the peo
ple can take such risks, nor be ex
pecrimecnted withl.
TPhe Sutpet'visor's shoul d look after
tis matter, for' should any accident
happ)en to life 01' prop0erty the County
is held responsible. ny negligence
Newvberry County has already had to
p)ay for a team of mutles and several
othler headl of stock and vchicles;
while a neighborintg coutnty had to pay
damauges of several thousand dollars
throutgh the loss of life df a lady and
child. All this, by niot pr1operly at
teniding to tile wants 01' r'equir'ements
of a weoll conducted ferry. If p)eople
pay their taxes to have ferries for tIle
accenmmaodationi of thae public they wvant
good, attentive and safe ser'vice. The
veory idea of a deaf, inoxp)erienced,
worthless negr'o boy attendinag to a
ferry whlere so much in life and prop0l
erty are at stake is preposterous to say
the least.
Nowv, if any one doubts these assor
t,ions it, cani be easily proven by numti
hers of people1 who have had to be
turtned away, 0or by examining the
recor'ds of either Supervisor's ollee
anld see the complaints that have bece
made in wt'iting by different parties.
