APRIL Is THE TIRE.
the Alliance-Reform Convention a Cwr
tainty Now-To be Called Directly
or Indirectly by Governor
Tillman Kimaself.
[The State, 23d.]
It was last Monday that The State
said that the political pot of reform is
this State was ' boiling merrily-th'at
some surprising things were going on
Ind that probably before the end of the
present week some of them, showing a
remarkable condition of affairs, would
.e made public. It was impossible
then to tell anything definite, although
the representatives of The State were
well informed and are better informed
.ow of the moves and counter-moves
hat have been made and are being
rade.
There has been a row going on in the
Reform ranks for some time between
,he two factions known as the Irby
'ction and the Alliance-Reform fae.
ion. A good. many have been looking
or it to be settled and nothing come
f it, buit it doesn't look now as ifany
inch settlederit is ever to be. At any
rate, the latter faction, headed by Mr.
Bowden, came out strongly demand
ng a March or April convention. Irby
snd his men, after a -conference in
Washington, deelsired just as strongly
gaiRst the holding of such a conven
:ion, and Governor Tillman did the
iame. But he soon saw his error,
glanced around, noticed which way the
wind was blowing and clambered up
n the fence. Well, now, it can be
itated as a fact that'this convention,
which the Alliance faction demanded,
sgoing to be held during the frst or
econd week of April-not later. And
he call Is going to be issued in a few
lays. It 'nay be that it will be made
ublic to-morrow or Monday. And it
nay surprise -The public to know that
3overnor. Tilman has at last decided
which faction he will af liate with, for
ie will either directly. or Indirectly
esue this call. It will appear1hat some
cind of a compromise has been made
ip. So it has, but the Alliance-Reform
eopleare theundoebted masters of the
ituation. Just why this statement is
nade, the public cannot yet k'now
hrough the columns of this paper.
Che,public is simply asked to wait and
ee.
Although the fact that theGovernor
ras to issue the call has been known
br some days here, the representatives
if The State were so situated that they
would not make it public, and yester=
lay a correspondent sent out the fact
'om Washington. When Governor
5linan was asedaboutit, he charae
erized it as "that lie from Washing
0n," and said he "knew nothing about
he callingof a convention" by hinself
['his appears as a denial on the part of
he Governor that he will call the con
rention, but The State regards this as
nerely a ruse on the part of the Gov
rnor, and if he does not call the con
enition directly he will Indirectly do
o, and his name wHi appear affixed to
he call.
It can be further stated, as sa pretty
rell settled fact, that the convention:
vhen it assembles will make nomina
ions for a State ticket, which will be
Irectly against the expressed desire of
he Irby faction. Just now It appears
hst Ellerbels the man who will head
he ticket. Be certainly seems to have
he strongest showig of any of those
nentioned. John Gary Evans~ will
ardly be in it, if the situatian is.rinder
,ood correetly. What effect that will
ave remains to be seen.
The situation is interesting tosay the
-st, and there will doubtless be fur
her development of a~ still more In
resting nature in the next few days.
And as to Irby and his men. Irby
ame from Washingtonsa few days ago.
es must have received Information of
he way affairs were going. It lastated
hat he has been In Columbia, but such
snot hought to be the case by those
rho are ira position to know. He Is
oubtless at home watching things
vth a jealous eye; :But if the writing
n the wall is read aright .he might as
eil have sfayed In Washington for
be good he will do to his side.
Some of the things told above would
ot have been mentioned, but for the
act that several who saw the dispatch
om Washington were anxiousto know
hat it meant. In consequence of this

WAmW.1NTON, February 22.-The
death here Tuesds%y of Miss Anna Ela
Carrol has recalled one of the most :
interesting memoriesof the late war.
Miss Carroll wasa memberoftheCl .
roll family, her father being-iTornas
King Carroll, governor of Marylanc. =i
in 1830. When the war broke out
Miss Carroll was known to manypub
lie men, - North and South, and she f
.took the keeneat interest In the saoee
of the Northern side. -
It was Miss Carroll for whom Sena.
tor Hoar, and Senator Lodge, of
sachusett and Senator Wise of e
Virginia, introduced bills for the y
ment to her of money on the ground
that she had planned the Tenne ee
campaign of Grant'and the minch to ~
the sea of Sherman. These bills never
passed Congress. The claim that the _
greatest strategical feat of the war wass
due to the brain of a woman was sufH
cient to arouse the greatest intenet.
Miss Carroll was not ale..to prodaee
sufficient evidene to prove her elaim,
che* because, the said, she had besr
bound to such strict secrecy at' te
time. GnrlSherman dne'h
story wholly, General Grant would *
never talk about it. When tCnm
was getting up Its celebrated war suries
this claim of Miss CarrollPs was -wre
folly investigated and no article on it
published.
*It has been said by those who claim
to know the facts that Miss Carroll
once saidit would bea.great thing ifa a
Union army could iarch through the
Confederacy._ From this, after many
years, the story that she had planned
"the grand strategy," as General Sher
man caliM it, grew unquestIonably.
She believed her story herself and
doubtless many others believed It sIlso. '

ITHAcA, N. Y, February -22.-A
large number of students of Cornell
University are leaving town as a re
sult of the sophomore's practical joke
on the freshmen last night. Whilethe
freshmen's annual banquet was in pro
gres, behind locked doors In the large
hal formerly occupied by the Masonic
Fraternity, the room was flooded with
chloride gas. A colored wogn, em
ployed as a cook died from the efreets
of the ga and about thirty students
were made ill but will all probably re
cover. Two students nme1 McNeil
and MeCulloch were reported dead,
but they are stBi alive though very Il. I
Some person had entered a room under
the kitchen attached to the hall and
bored two holes in the ceiling above.
On a table stood a large jug, corked,
butin the cork were two rubber tubes,
which ran nearly up to- the eiling -j
where they were connected with two
lass tubes which ran through the
iholes in the floor, thus spreading in the
room above, the gas generated from the -i
iug, which was found to be oblorine, a
rixture of salt and-suiphurle acid,
l'here was, however, no clue to the
party who had been guilty of this das
ardly piece of business. The coroner
as taken the matter in hand since the
xodus of students.
