Newberry Building and Loan Asso
ciation was held on Thursday evening,
7th instant.
The president and the secretary and
treasurer made their reports, showing
the condition of the eqsociatlon.
. Ninety-six assessments have been
paid, and the book value of each share

The trustees of this district have
purchased a site from Mr. M. M. Long
for a school building. It is a most
beautiful locality-on a igh ridge, sit
uated on the public road just a few
hundred yards above Mr. Long's dwell
ing. The trustees will meet to-morrow
afternoon for the purpose of 'consider
ing the construction of the house.
Work will be pushed forward at once,
and we have no other anticipations
but that in the near future we will
have one among the best country
schools in Newberry County.

Our little village h..s again felt the
sad presence of death. On Friday last,
the 8th instant, Alice, the beloved wife
of Mr. W. A. Pitts, fell peacefully
asleep. Once more has a happy home
circle been broken and a loving daugh
ter,. wife and mother taken from her
dear ones in the very midst of her
usefulness. She was a member of the
Methodist Church and gave evidenee
of a soul at peace with its maker. She
leaves four children, three of tender
years and a married daughter, Mrs.
W. T. Shelton, of Waynesville, N. C.,
who was summoned to her mother's
deathbed, but reached there all too
late. Oh! heavy sorrow, bitter grief.
The funeral services were held at the
residence on Saturday morning by
Ray. W. W. Daniel and the remains
taken to Ninety-Six for interment.
Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Welch, who for
merly resided here, have the sympathy
of the community in the very sad be
reavement they have sustained in the
death of their manly son Jesse, who
died in Greenville last Saturday.
Rev. J. W. McClure preached a
thrilling sermon lst Sunday night on
the momentous subject of "The last
judgment." His first lesson was the
25th chapter of St. Matthew's Gospel
and the seend the 20th chapter of
Revelation. The text was taken from
the 31st, 32nd and 33d verses of - the
Gospel read. The portrayal of his
theme was at times weird, awful and
startling, and at other times sublime
and beautiful in its imagery. At the
present time, when the eternal hills
are trembling and multitudes rushing
here and there, and, like the Athenians
of old, many of us are forgetting the
only true God and worshiping arms
of flesh, and silver and gold, and bow
ing at an hundred false shrines, the
grouping of the speaker's thoughts
were of overwhelming force and sug
gestiveness.
From time to time for a number of
years Mr. McClure has been consider
ing and preparing this exhaustless
subject, and, though not finished, has
it sufficiently in shape to preach upon
it.
How true it is that "the heavens de
clare the glory." Last Sunday's sun
set was magnificent. The heavens
were ablaze with beauty at every polint.
Electrical billows, luminous pavilions
and curtained splendor filled the sky.
The blending of colors and shading of
tints was rarel beautiful.

Mr. Jesse G. Welch, son of Mr. A.
C. Welch, of Newberry, diedof typhoid
fever in Greenville on SatardAy, 9th
instant, aged 23 years.
The Greenville News speaks. as fol
lows of the high esteem the deceased
bore in that city:
"General regret was caused lere yes
terday by the announceme4 of the
death of young Welch, mai Ing clerk
at the post office. Mr. Welch was first
employed by Postmaster C 'ttenden
but because of his efficiency d popu
larity held his place under th change
of administration. He was v wide
ly known and universally Ii ed here.
His parents were with him at the time
of his death. His brother, frafm Texas,
will probably be here to-dayl and will
accompany the zmains of the'deceased
to Newberry, where they wilrbe buried
in Rosemont Cemetery."
Mrs. Pitts, wife of Mr. W. A. Pitts,
of Helena, died on Frida, 8th in
stant. She leaves a husba and four
children.
Miss Helena Frietag died on Monday,
11th instant, at the residen of Bev.
A. J. Bowers, in the 2Dth y of her
age. She was a native of Germany,
and came to Newberry from s4vannah
a year ago with the family sof Prof.
Bowers. Though far from h' native
land, she enjoyed the tender Z nistra
tions of home in life and in %er last
illne -. She was buried in R34emont
Cemetery.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Jno.
S. Fair died on Monday, 11th inptant,
aged seven months.
