Harris' Lithia springs.
A regular line of hotel hacks meets
trains at Waterloo and Cross Hill sta
tions, each of which is about two miles
distant. Cross Hill is on the Georgia,
Carolina & Northern Railroad, and
Waterloo on the Port Royal & Western
Carolina. The roads to the springs are
good, and there are many delightful
drives in the neighborhood.

The Antis Meet.
The Herald and News uuderstands
that the antis had a meeting at New
berry last week. We are exceedingly
unfortunate. WVe cannot get the pass
word to any of these meetings. But
after diligent search we learn that they
had taken no club vote and had not
suggested any legislative ticket, hut f
were simply hearing the news fromj
the different sections of the county;
and from the reliable infor mation re.
ceived they found the Sheppard and
Orr ticket in the lead by a safe major
ity, so they adjourned to their homines
satisfied, to meet again-some time
soon, we presume. No time named.
The Ladies.
Tphe pleasant effect and perfect safel y

There is more Catarrh in this se'ction
of the country than all other diseases
put together, and until the last few
years was supposedi lo be incurable.
F'or a great many years doctors pro
pounced it a local disease. and pre
scribed local remedies, and by eon
-stantly failing to cure with local treat
mnent, pronounced it incurable. Science
has proven catarrh to be a constitution
al disease, and therefore requires eon
sttutional treatmer.t. Hall's Catarrh
Cure, manufacttured by F. J1. Cheney
Co., Toledo, Ohio, is the only const1
tutional cure on the market. It is
taken internally in doses from 10) drops
to a teaspoonful. It acts directly orn
the blood and mucous surfaces of the
system. They orf'er one hundred dol

The Stat.' Treasurer Ready to Pay the
Jnly Interest-The State of the )ebt.
[Special to News and Courier.]
('o1 m A, June 30.-The clerks of
the State treasury department were to
day husily engaged in sending out
checks in p1aymnelt of the July inter.st
on the State debt. It is estimated that
the amount to be distributed will he
between $1SI1,u0) and $200,000. At the
last session of the Legislature c:8:J,00tt
was appropriated for the payment of
interest an the State debt. Half of
this amount, $191,500, is payable in
July, and with the back interest due
the amount now to be paid out will be
near $2I0,000. The department an
nounces that it will have ample funds
to pay all of the interest now due. The
figures show that about three-fourths
of the interest will be pail the holders
of securities in this State and the re
maining one-fourth in New York and
other States. There are about $1,2~),
000 worth of securities held outside of
the State.
It will be interesting to note what is
the interest paying debt of the State at
present. It is:
Brown consols..................$5,q0'10,7G 70
4 per cent blues............... 4(0,000 00
Agricultural College scrip,
G per cent...................... 191,S00 00
Besides this there are the 4 per cent.
hands, Act I 880-91, atue in 1 980. The
de,partmient does not senm inclined to
give out the amiount of these bonds, but
it. can he stated that it is very little
more than was reported to the last
Legislature. The treasury depart ment
shIows that the total debt of the State
when the funding will be completed
will be $6,40a;,6. Tfhis estimate as to
the State's debt has been accep)ted as
being correct. The estimates of several
experts have made the figures vary in
sums not over $100). Thle lawmakers
will have sorme hard auts to crack in
making arrangements to refund the
State debt. Governor Tillman can
possibly explain tlte refunding process
to tinanciers so as to satisfy them.

It will be seen that the terms of all of
the (ircui t Judges given will expire bo
fore the ead of the terms of the next
legislatora, with the exception of Judges
Norton and Fraser.
The only election this fall will be for
the Judge of the 5th circuit, now held
by .Judge Ker-haw, and at the final
sessionl of the next Legislature the suc
cessors of Judges Izlar, Hudson, With
erspoon, Aldrich, Wallace and Asso
ciate .Just;ce McGowan will be elected.
The chr nees are that all ofthe Judges
who have so faithfully and etliciently
served the State will be re-elected, yet
there is already talk of their being de
posedI. Somie say that the administra
tion is after certain special judicial
scalps. With the conservative tone
which is expected of the next Legis'a
ture, it is generally thought that the
fond hopes of a number of administra
tion men wvill be disappointed. It is,
however, very certian that these men
will look after their own interests, and
it is expected of the friends of the
Judges that they pay a bit of attention
to the Legislature.
It would be considered rather pro
phetic to even suggest the opposing
candidatce of the .J udges to be elected
by the n xt house. Here is an off
hand list, which may have its inacu
ra les:

It is, of course, very probable that
the candida.es will be reinforced. It
is stated that J udge James Aldrich is
about the =urest of re-election, that is
if the administration forces are in con
trol, on ac"ount of his position in the
Cjoosaw ea:se.
Mr. WV. 2. Benet is suggested as the
chief oppoient of Associate Justice MIe
(Gowan. Mr. MIeetze, of Lexington, is
hardly "iit it'' just now.
It might bce interesting to compare
the serviec of the t wo lists at the Bar.
The competency of the men nmy in a
measure be judged thereby; it usually
does in most other professions. The
records show they were admitted to the
Biar as follows: J udlge MicGowan, 18453;
Judge Ka ushaw, 184:3; JuldgelIzlar,1I85S;
Judge HuItdson, 18> (about); Judge
Wallace, 15->; Judge Witherspoon,

Ira B. Jones, 1872; John L. MIcLaurin,
1S92; John Gary Evans, 188Sd.
It will rerhaps appear ridiculo"s to
consider sc me of the men spoken of as
posible successors for the Judges now
on the bench, but curious things hap
pen these days.

When I say "he" I mean Pinetop,
for towns, generally, like a great many
other things. animate and inanimate, o

But Pinetop is not that sort of a -

t e hopes, therefore, that his neigh

full force on that day. p
Candidates are specially invited to -
attend-they will be allowed, if they
desire, to stand on the platform.
['T'hat remark is not borrowed from k
Chauncer or Christie.] a
-No extra charge made for the said r!
standing of eandidates on the platform, s
as there is no intention of victimizing
them just because they happen to be
candidates.
As for their constittyency there will tl
be no discriination-the antis and -
the no-antis being permitted to sit in
the same coaches; on opposite sides, if
they wish, where those who want to r
be on the r;ght side can view the fields
from the light furnished them, while v
those who are to be in the "left" can
enjoy the landscapes and' slides and c
groundswells from their standpoint. P
In the interest of peace and unity t
[no other opportunity] it is hoped the t
excursion will be a grand success. -
So much for the song and dance per

Good trip. Cheap excursion.
To show how cheap it is it is only
necessary to state that the railroad it
self gave 4th of July excursion rates
Monday and the fare from Newberry
to Charleston and return was $6.90- e
within ten cents of a seven dollftr bill! tl
Three dollars and ninety cents more
for half the time. And no doubt the
authorities considered it a liberal rate.
Everybody knows the regular fare tl
from this point to Charleston and back w
is 10.S0-seven dollars and eighty
cents more than for a ticket on next
Tuesday's excursion.
There will doubtless be many who di
will take a supply of "chicken and
cake" along with them, and there will t
be numbers of the "lords" who will do -
their lodging on the train on the home1
stretch.J
The excursion neced cost very little fo
above the railroad fare. PI
No doubt a large body will avail
itself of this opportunity to visit the]
beautiful city by the sea.
