At the opera house by the Newberry
Rifles on Wednesday, the 15th, was a
fine success. The play was acted splen
didly and with the ease of professional
players. A large audience was present.

Gave Bond.
Ben Stevens, the young white man who
killed Wash Bennett, near Chappells, on
Wednesday, the 8th. surrendered himself
to Sheriff Rizer on Monday. He was ta
ken before Associate Justice Pope on a
writ of habeas 'corpus, and was admitted
to bail in the sum of 51,500 for his ap
pearance at the July court.
Stevens gave the bond yesterday.

Election of Teachers.
At a meeting of the Trust~ms of the
Newberry graded schools held last Thurs
day. Superintendent Frank Evans was re
eleted for the next year, and the follow
ing lady teachers for the 'white schools:
Mrs. Maggie L. Tarrant, Mrs. Maggie
Moore, Mrs. Birda Boozer and Misses
Bessie Wheeler, Eloise Welch and Lilla
Kibler.
The teachers for the public schools
were all re-elected 'without change.

Mr. Hope A. Dickert will run a big
excursion from Clinton to Charleston
on Tuesday, July 12th, and return on
the next day, the 13th. The route will
be on the Columnbia, Newberry and
Laurens Road and the Atlantic Coast
Line via Sumterand Lane's. This route
will insutre a comfortable and quick

Off to the United synod.
The United Synod of the Lutheran
Church in the South meets to-day at
Knoxville, Tenui. It only meets in
biennial sessions. The last mieeting was
held in Wilmington, N. C. There are
several delegates fromt Newberry who
will attend. Revs W. C. Sebaeff'er,
(G. WV. Holland, J. B. Fox and A. G.
Voigt, and Messrs Geo. B. Cromuer,
D. B. Wheeler and H. H. Folk go as
delegates. Maj. P. E. Wise and Mr.
A. H. Kohn will go from Prosperity.
Mr. R. C. Perry fromn Newberry, ando
Mr. E. H. Aull who goes in the interest
of the Lutheran Visitor.

Bad Negro With a Knife.
David Boazman had aL cuttinlg scrape
with Joe Davis on Saturday on Mr.
.io. C. Goggans' p lace in Township
No. 8. Boazman had a dull knife, but he'
carved up Davis in a terrible man ner.
He gave Davis a cut from ear to chin
on the left side of his face and cut thle
ear in twain, then three gashes on his
thigh and a six inch cut on the back
and two on his abdomen. Davis cut
Boazman slightly on the thumb.
Boazman was arrested on Monday
and committed to jail by Trial Justice
Maybin.
