The railroad crossing on Caldwell
street was torn up when the C., N. &

years ago, and it basnever been fixed.
it would cost but little and should be
attended to. Pedestrians have to take
the public road when they reach this
point in order to cross. The council
should get after the railroad authorities
and have this matter attended to with

Rtedistricting the County.
The County Board of Examiners
having called a meeting of the Schooi
Trustees of the county for March 2G, to
-osider the question of redistricting
the county, twelve or fifteen trustees
answered the call. Many were pre
vented from coming by the heavy
rains of the night before. Col. T. WX.
Holloway was chosen chairman c,f the
meeting, and T. W. Keitt sec;etary.
School Commissioner Kibler stated
that the County Board of Examiners
had called the trustees togethe:: to cou
sider the redistricting of the county.
The trustees were called upon to give
their opin ions as to the best way of
doing the work. Different opinions
were expressed. The conclusion ar
rived at, however, was that the work
should be don:e in such a 'way as not to
nake changes only when necessary.
The County Board will go to work
at an early day, so that the whole
county, or such part f it as they may
think best, may be redistricted before
the schools open next fall.

THIEVES AT WORK.
J. W. White's Store Robbed-Stealing Brass
Off a Steam Engine.
A "burglar" entered the store of J.
W. White, on Nlain street, last Thurs
day night by breaking through the
large pane of glass in the front door.
The show case was robbed of about
forty watches, six dozen chains, and a
quantity of anuiiunition. The niight
was dark and rainy, and just suited for
such work.
No attempt was made to get into the
safe in which was kept the valuable
watches. The burglar was not skilled
in the art. He must also be a native
and acquainted with the town, for on
Saturday morning Mr. White found a
small flour sack upon the hack poreh
of his residence in "Brooklyn," with
thirty-eight of tbe watches and nearly
all the missing chains in it, where it
had been put on Friday ni,_ht.
Four watchs and several ehains are
till missing. Mr. White estimates his
loss at :5. No clue to the burglar.
A BRAZEN THEFT.
When Shockley Bros. opened their
shop for work on Monday moring
they found that all the brass work on
their stationary engine, which stands
in the yard, had been taken oft. The
valves were all gone and even the
steam whistle was missing.
They went to Mr. J. W. White's
store to inquire if he had been offered
any brass. Two negro boys had just
left the store. They had offered a lot
of battered brass there for sale, and Mr.
White had concluded to give theni fif
teen cents for the lot. When the nearo
boys saw the Shockley Bros. coming
up the street they skipped.
The brass work on the engine cannot
be put back for less than, $50. The en
ine was almost a new one.
There were four negro boys concerned
in the theft. They dismantled the
mngine on Sunday and battered the
brass to make it look worn.
Their parents have offered to make
;ood the loss.

Death of Mr. W. 5. 1togers.
Seldom has the death of a compara

plored as was that of the deceased, who c
came last year fromi L,aurenls to make
his home in Newberry as agent at the

qualities of heart and head, and his
aflable manners, soon won him many
warm friends.
After a brief illness firl congestion
of the brain, he died the night of Tues
day the 22d in-tant, surrounded by t
dear ones and loving friends, and his
relains were conveyed the next day to t
his father's home -at Ninety-Six for
burial. He was in the 25th year of his c
age and left a wife and an infant. Mrs. r

L ev. Mlr. Kuhns at the Lutheran Church.
The Lord's Day evening, last past,
was most gracious in its serenity and
oveliness, and Luther Chapel was
illed by a congregation from every
luarter of the community and suburb
&n parts; the occasion being the service
,y Mr. Kuhus. prior to his departure.
Tfhe reverend gentleman took his
ext-a sermon within itself-from the
ieroic words of the grand old prophet
feremiah, recorded in the lath verse of
he (;t h chapter.
We cannot reproduce the discourse,
for even present a satisfying epitome
>f this excellent seriou in its connect
d presentation. One of the prominent
houghts of the theme was the urgent
iecessity, on the part of unbelievers,
or a confession of sin, with godly sor
ow and contrition for the same, a de
)arture therefrom and an instant re
urn to "the good old ways," wherein
vould be found the well of salvation, a
rue centre of rest, and a life of fruitful
tctivities. The mere name upon the
:hurch registry, and confirming hands
ipon the head of the candidate for
-hurch membership will not alone
lied the perfume of divine grace upon
,he heart and the life. Religion is nota
nere medicament to lull the soul into
sense of restful security. It is a practi
:al manifestation of daily growth in
piritual life. Faith will enripen the
ruits and develop the beautiful works
)f this daily life.
Mr. Kuhns urged that repentanoe
hould be of that kind .needing not
Lgain to be repented of; that an open
onfession, a public profession of faith
n the Lord Jesus Christ, and "justifica
ion, by faith" in Him, would lead
o the peaceable fruits of the spirit; that
t is essential for man to have a knowl
dge of the fact that he is a sinner, in
>rder to have a just conception and a
rue repentance-to know that "man is
sinner with a soul to save, and that
ie has a Saviour who can save that
oul." That all the blessed promises and
ssurances of the Bible are for the true
.ud earnest believer who will diligent
y seek and "ask for the old paths,
vhere is the good way, and walk there
He told how important it was that
hristians. should stand-as those at
he pass-in this rugged path of duty
eflecting neither to the right nor to
he left, nor go backward, for, in so
oing, all the promises and assurances
f the beautiful life to come, will be an
ulled and abrogated by the one awful
eclaration, that he that believeth not
ball inherit everlas ing death. It were
-ell to remember, urged the speaker,
u this day of change and departure,
lhen science and art and the hand of
be iconoclast and speculation are so
usily submitting many things to the
rucible of change, that Truth is perma
eut, and the eternal verities of God's
rays are changeless forever.

How I Was Cured of So-Called Cancer.
LULATION, GA.
Dear Sir-This is to certify that I was
a sufferer of a place on my under lip for
fourteen years, and was unde:- treat
ment of different physicians, but they
done me no good. I had lost hope of
being cured by medical treatment. I
then went to a doctor living in 'Florida,
who treated them by trt. After going
to him it got well, apparen:ly, for
awhile, but returned as bad as ever. I
then concluded to try P. P. P. (Prickly
Ash, Poke Root ;and Potassium), and
after taking five bottles (pint size) was
cured. I also find it a good melicine to
give a good appetite, and give proper
digestion.
Yours, most truly,
L. J. STRICHLAND.
