On Saturday night the barn and stables of Robert Floyd, colored, in Tow aship No. 6, were burned. He lost 2,400 bundles of fodder and a quantity of other stock food. The cotton house near by, containing five or six bales of cotton, was saved by great exertion. The origin of the fire is believed to be incendiary. Aull has been drawn -is a juror in the United States Court to be held in Columbia in December. The brickwork on the Graded School building has been completed. Os. Wells says it is O. K. And so it is. Two shares of the capital stock of the National Bauk of New ber.y were sold on Nonday at S175 per share, par value $100. One of the finest pointer dogs ia the State, belonging to Mr. James Wells, was shot and killed by an unknown party last Monday at about 3 a. in. A meeting of tbe Lutheran coore gation will be held to-night (Wednes day) to hear the report of the committee .ppointed to select a plan for a new chu-ch. Mrs. E. C. Houseal and Mrs. Wm. Johnson are the delegates from Luther Chapel Society to the Lutheran Woman's Missiona-y Convention at Prosperity to-morrow. District Deputy Grand Master J. T. Barron paid an official visit to Amity Lodge N o. 87 A. F. M., on last Monday night, and gave a full exemplification of tbe work before the lodge. The common'on will be adminis tered at the Lutheran church next Sunday moraing. The serv*ces at night will begin at 7:Z0and the seimon will be preached by Prof. A. G. Voigt. Mr. C. W. Miller, of Miller Bros., Columbia, has come to Newberry and is buying cotton here. He bas head quar ters at the store of Smith & Nearn. We welcome Mr. Miller to our midst and hope be will keep the market on a mov- upwards. Saledy was a very quiet day. A small crowd in town. No land was sold by officers of court. The Execu tors of F. H. Domioick, deceased, offered some property for sale. The sale advertised by the sheriff was with drawn. M .s. H. C. Barre, a former Newber rian but who has been runninga board ing house in Gree;ville, has recently taken charge of ..,e Goodwin House. The last quarterly conference of the Methodist Church at Newberrv for this 3ear will be held next Sunday night after service at the church. This will be the last appointment of Rev. A. J. On Monday a reporter strolled down to the opera houre and there found the clerk aad treasurer, a policeman and two butchers enjoying the luxury of a quiet game of marbles. The meeting"was called to order by the president, Gen. Y. J. Pope, who in a few well chosen remarks reviewed the objects of the Association and the important duty we owe to the cause and to the memory of those who went u with us in the support of so noble a cause. Twenty-nine additional names had beea added to the roll since the last meeting, makng the total number of names on the roll to dat,: )6. Reports of committees were then calleo for. Y. J. Pope, ft orn the com mittee to prepare a constitution and by-laws for the Asoc;a.ion, :eported tbat the committee w is not yet pre pared to i-eport. On mo,ion of Dr. James Mclatosb, the cotAmittee was coutinutd and instructed to report at next meeting. Col. 0. L. Schumpert being absenton official business and no other member of his committee be ing presett, no report was heard from that committee. W. H. Wallace, treasurer, made a report on behalf of the different com mittees appointed to raise funds for the Davis monument; the amount ieport d as turned over to the treasu -tr, $180.90. Col. J. F. J. Caldwell made some re marks in favor of continuing the com mittee appointed to raise funds until the first monday in November next. On motion the following resolution was unanimously adopted: Resolved, That the thanks of this Association are due and are hereby tendered to the ditTerent committees appointed to collect funds for the Davis monument, and that they be re quested to continue their efforts to col lect further funds until the first Mon day in Novediber ne-t. On motion of Dr. S. Pope, the fol lowing resolution was adopted: Resolved, That it is the sense of this meeting of the Newberry Survivors' Association that the State of South Carolina should p'-ovide a home for her disabled Confederate soldiers and saa men. The secretary reported that in obedi ence to the diiection of the Association he used every effort to procure the cer tificates of experience of Confederate prisoners in Northern prisons, and re ceived th ree (3), copies of which weie sent, by order of the A, sociaLion to Dr. John A. The congregation of the Lutheran church at ameetingon Sunday decided t ) appropriate $60 as the basis of a scbol arsbip in New berryCollege to be known as "The O.B. Mayer scholarship." This is a good idea. Dr. Mayer was a mem ber of the faculty of the college from the beginning of the college until his death, and a devoted member of the Lutheran church. It shotld be made a perpetual memorial to his memory.
