It is understood however that con

Among the Railroads.
There have been several changes re
eently in the schedules and the trains
on the railroads. Some of these have
been already mentioned in The Herald
and News.
The Anderson train now stops at
Prosperity and passes Newberry in the
morning at 8.30. The schedule in the
afternoon is unchanged.
The passenger train on the C. N. &
L. now runs through from Clinton to
Columbia, passing Newberry at the
same time as heretofore. This train is
in charge of Capt. Gailliard. He, how
ever, is nowv on a trip to Mexico and
California and his place is being filled
temporarily by Capt. Burnham. Tins
train does not carry a mail train but
takes pouches from New berry to Clin
ton and to Columbia carrying mail for
those places and points beyond. The
freight on this road still rt'ns on the
same schedule between Columbia and
New berry. It is in charge of Capt. B.
F. Turner. A mail car has been put on
this train and the postaliclerk is anegro
from about Fishdam in Union County
y thbe name of Rice. A change ii :,he
Schedule of this train is expected to go
into effect next Sundlay. Just what
the schedule will be has not been made
known, but it is probable that it will
leave Columbia early in the mormiag
and return late in th'e afternoon. It
will run thrr ugh to Clinton. This wil
be a good schedule if it is adopted. By
it we will have a regular early miail
from Columbia.

- M*Caughrin, of Newberry, Unani
mloU9 Choice of Stock Holders.
Much interest has been felt as to
who would succeed Colonel Rammett
at presidaut of Piedmont factory. The
names of several gentlemen have been
mentioned, and the meeting yesterday
excited more comment and speculation
than any former assembly of the stock
holders.
'The importance of this meeting
caused a full representation of the
-ock. There was great unanimity in
the election of officers and directors, and
the selection seems to meet the approval
of those who 1:now the men and are
interested in the mill. The following
are the oflicers and directors:
R. L. McCaughrin, of Newberry,
Presid'-nt ; Hamlin Beattie, of Green
ville, vice-President.
Directo s: F. J. Pelzer, Hamlin
Beattie, J. L. Orr, T. Q. Donaldson, R.
L. McCaughrin, Somerfield Baldwin,
J. N. Martin, J. P. Kennedy, S. A.
Craig.
The present clerical force was re
elected. President McCaughrin did
not definitely accept the position, tak
ing sixty days for consideration. If
he accepts he will move to Greenville.
Appropriate resolutions concerning
Colonel Hammett were presented and
will be given to the press at a later
day.
There is general pleasure and satis
faction over the selection of president.
Colonel McCaughrin is well known in
Greenville as a business man of distin
guished ability and a valuable citizen,
and Greenville people congratulate
themselves on the prospect of having
him and his family as residents of the
city.-Greenville News, 14th.
The Herald and News called to see
Mr. McCaughrin on Monday, but he
declined tp talk for publication in re
;ard to his election oras to what would
possibly be his decision further than to
say that he had not yet made up his
mind as to what would be his decision.
He bad the matter under considera
tion, and had been given sixty days
within which to give a definite an
swer, and he did not knowyet what he
would determine.
The offer is a very flattering one and
comes unsought to Mr. McCaughrin.
It brings with it a decided increase in
salary and lighter work.
If Mr. McCaughrin should determine
to accept., it would necessitate his re
moval to Greenville and it would be
quite a loss to Newberry. His place
would be hard to fill. It is to be hoped
that he can find it consistent with his
best interests to decline the offer and
to determine to remain with us in New
berry.

The Cotton Seed,Oii Mill.
A meeting of the stockholders of the
Newberry Cotton Seed Oil Mill and

afternoon in Council Chambers. The
object of the meeting is to consider the
advisability of putting in a ginnery in
connection with the mill. It is very
probable that the stoekholders will
decide to make the imnprovemrent. The
proposed improvement will cost about
N4,500) and will be of the latest and
most improved machinery. A bale of
cotton can be ginned in fifteen minutes
without handling the seed cotton at
all. It will be a step forward and
there is no doubt the stockholders will
decide to make this improvement.

Last week this correspondent was
left in the soup, and left in realistic
soup, when I began to realize to the
fullest extent that "man that is born
of w:omhan is full of trouble." The
boys in the army used to say "man is
of few (lays and short ra:ions." My
rations were not as short as some peo
ple's pocket books, but my trouble was
of the highest or?ter. Firstly, ourcook,
after having served faith tully for thir
teen months, and in the mean time
putting on about fifty pounds to her
avodupoise. concluded that she would
vacata for a while-would rest a week
or so-in fact, she said she believed
that she was taking the dropsy. Well
I knew the nature of her dropsy very
well. The true cause of her corpu
lency was the regular dropping of all
sutticient quantities of good, rich ra
tions into her gastric organ. My larger
half and I concluded that we could get
along for a while at least, provided
that I would give her such little assist
ance as making the coffee, frying ham
and steak, bringing the water, getting
