depends on your natural gifts and
your opportunities. But how about
the other nine hundred and ninety
ut 'ne? Are their lives to be a failure

mense bulk of capital?
Tn other words. is a surplus of
cash the prime factor in the problem
of happiness. and is a citizen's use
fulness to be measured by his bank
account so'ely
Y4u may also get the fame you
wish. It depends on your education.
on the quantity and quality of your
brains and'on your native genius.
With these. everything is possible;
without them, you will everlastingly
hunger for the unattainable, and in
the end draw the coverlid of a wasted
life over your head and die a dis
- appointed man.
The number of those who achieve
such greatness that the public build
monunents to their memory is very
few, but if your name happens to be
in that list the Herald will gladly
subscribe for the purpose.
Don't make any mistakes in this
matter. If you wish to get out of
life all there is in it- for you-there
is a way to do it.
Real happiness consists of health,
self resp)ect, the good will of the
community and a sufficient income
to gratify your reasonable wants.
Everything else is trivial and not
worth bothering about. The man
who has steady work, fair wages, a
cosy home, enough to eat, a thick~
overcoat, and the consciousness of
personal integrity, is a mightily

1. Dont aim too high, but aim
straight. Emerson's adlvice to "hitch
your wagon to a star'" is the merest

Longfellow's poem. --Excelbior," is
another bit of exquisite trash. Of
course it is beautiful. "and all like
that. von know,'' but it is not adapted
to a rough and tumble fight with
circum.tances.
The young man in that poem
shoulders a flag and starts for-well,
for nowvhere. so far as we can dis
cover. He is one of the climbers-anl
explore'r of the celestial Alps. When
he gits to the top of a hill he turns
back and screams out "Excelsior -
What for we can't say. This is a free
country, ho-.ever, and he can do as
he pleases. Up he trudges until he
gets to the snow cappej)d summflit of
the next ascen~t. Unireasona~ble boy!
he seems to be just as disatisfied as
ever. Evidently he' wants the~ earth.
In spite of a chronic bronchitis and
in constant danger of p~neumonia. he
waves his bunting, yells "Excelsior!
once more and strikes out for an
altitude where the mercury freezes
in the bulb.
He maiy be going yet. for aught
we know. He has undertakeni a
tough job. though, and his flag by
this time must be in tatters.
You want to ge't rid of a good deal
of this "excelsior'' folderol. It is a
mighty poor' investment of talent.
Stay down below, and let the glaci
ers and mountain peaks take care of
themselves.

matter what it is. Study your busi
ness. Make yourself master of it by
nuttine your head anid heart into it.
If it is bookkeeping. thien keep books
in suchi fashion that the Angel Gab

T HIS VALUABLE WORK IS
now going through the press, and
will soon be ready for subscribers.
Besides the original Annals of Judge
O'Neall, this book will contain the
names of all the volunteers who went
from Newberry District to the war with
Mexico; it will contain the names of
all from the County who were in the
Confederate service in any capacity
that is, all wbose names the compiler
has been able to procure-with the cas
ualties that happened to them; it will
contain an account of the heroic death
of Calvin Crozier, who died that an
other might live; it will contain a
sketch of the trying times of the Re
construction.
It will contain some Revolutionary
anecdotes and scraps of history, not
nsually published in the histories of
the State, or of the United States. It
will tell of Emily Geiger and her peril
ous ride. It will c<nta'n sketches of
different sections of the county, of the
schools, of the celebrated Mount Bethel
Academy, of the religious denomina
tions, of benevolent societies, of Miss
Galloway and her mission to Egypt,
of changes in business and business
firms, of descendants of famiihes who
long ago left this county.
It will contain some account of War
Times in Newberry during the late war
between the States.
Nor is the literature of the country
forgotten, but specimens of that will
be given; the history of the newspapers
will be related. Some account of the
old times, as seen through the eyes of
old men, will be given.
It has been the aim of the compiler
to make a book, valuable not only for
the present time, but for generations to
come-a standard work of reference in
the history of New berry County.
A nd as the number of copies printed
will be limited, it would be well for all
persons who wish copies to give their
names, at an early day, to,Mr. John A.
