The "topic party" at Mr. R. L. Me Caughrin's last Friday night was quite a succes.% About twenty-five couples were present. Mrs. Peter Robertson has a beautiful night blooming cereus. Five blooms opened on it Sunday night. Mr. Ed. Scholtz has sold his hand some residence on College street to Dr. W.E. Pelham for $3,750. Mr. Scholtz expects to leave Newberry'soon, on ac count of the health of his wife. -Mr. Algie M. Mosely, the efficient operator on the C. & G. at Newberry, is up for a few days to consult Dr. Thos. McCoy. His many friends here will be pained to learn that his left eve has been paralyzed, and very little hopes are entertained that a cure can be eff'ected. He has lost control of the muscles of the eye, and for the past few days the sight also has been impaired. -Laurens Advertiser. The Town Council is having a new cover put on the large cistern on the public square. Several parties went to Clinton yes terday to the tournament. The negroes will have a mass meet ing at Cline's grove on Friday at 12 o'clock. The circular says distinguished speakers will be on hand. Maj. L. J. Jones has in his garden a variety of tomato known as the "tree tomato," The fruit is nice and the stalk grows like a tree, and will - not take up much rooni or fall over as easily as the bush tomato usually grown. Silas Smith, a negro in town, was re ported dead on Tuesday morning and Coroner Buist immediately summoned a jury and repaired to the house of Smith to hold the inquest, but was told by Smith himself that he was not yet ready for the 'quest. He did not (die. Glenn Cannon, who was convicted at the last term of court of assault and battery with a pistol, and sentenced to pay afine of $75or go to the peniten tiary for six months, paid to the Clerk of Court yesterday the $7.5 and will be released from the penitentiary. Quite a'number of water melons have beei on the market the past few days. C. C. 3fcWhirter will move into the balcony house on Maine Street. The Farmers Alliance for the State met in Columbia yesterday in Annual Session. The Alliance in Newberry County, numbers 4.50 and is represented in the State Alliance by Hon. J. L. Keitt. Somehow or other we have gotten dates a little niixed lately. We will not put the error at the door of the "devil" or the convernient "typo" but will have to admit the editor is' at fault, without any effort at explanation. Let it be remembered now that the County Sun day-schoo' Convention will be held on Thursday and Friday, August 1st and 2d, and that the picnic at Pomaria will be Friday, August 2d. Two of our young men, after seeing the young ladies safely home from 'the "Topic Party," stopped on the corner to talk awhile before separating--when suddenly they discovered (or thought they did) that there was some one in the kitchen~ of our esteemed minister who lived near by. After listening for sometime of the "moving around" of the "supposed intruder," they with a yearning desire to assist in catching him, decided to awake the occupants of the house, and lay the situation before them. The Tangle in which the Postinaster Gen eral Finds Himself about the Newberry Postoffice. (Fromn the New York Sun.] WASHINGTON, July 17.-The colored Republicans of the county of Newberry, South Carolina, have a rod in pickle for Brother John Wananiaker, Presi dent Harrison's postmast-r general. According to the stories told here by olored men they have been led to be lieve that the -postmaster general is mixing the affairs of the postottice de partment and his Philadelphia busi ess house together. Henry Kennedy, a colored man from Newberry, who was a delegate to the Chicago Convention, is in the city at present. the bearer of a set of resolutions adopted at a mfas meeting in Newberry on tbe Fourth of July recommending one Charles WV. Whitnmire for postmaster of that lively town of 4,000 inhabitants. In con nec tion with Whitmire's candidacy for the appointment, Kennedy and his friends tell the following interesting tale: .Whitumire was appointed postnmaster at Newberry by Postmaster General Wanamaker last May. His numerous colored friends rejoiced at his success, for he was very popular. The populIa tion of the town of Newberry is two thirds colored, and they control the county by overwhelming numbers. But the white people of the town ob jected to the postmaster general's ap pointment, and the newspapers of the Stateadvised the predominant element to withdraw to a man their patronage from the princely merchant of Phila delphia. The idea took and Mr. Wana maker found his mercantile interests the subject of a boycott.. Before this he had written to Whitmire, notifying him of his appointment, and requesting him to come on here to receive his commission. Before the young man arrived, however, the boycott had been declared, and when Whitmire put in an appearance the postmaster general told him that he would be comipelled to withhold the appointment for the rea son that he had learned that tbere were white Republicans in the town, and he preferred that a white man should hold the post. Mr. Wanamaker was told that there was not a white Republican in the town of New berry, nor was there one in the county, for that matter, wiho was identified with the party before the election of President Harrison. Whitmire was then told to return home, with the understanding that his commission would be forwarded to him. Days and weeks went by and still the comiission was withheld. Then letters and telegrams began to pour into Presi dent Harrison and the postmaster general, giving the strongest endorse ments and asking that Whitmire should be made postmaster at New berry. Some three weeks ago the young man re turned to Washington with the names, as endorsers, of more than 4,000 of the people of his State and county,-and with these the names of every member of the Republican executive committee of his State with the exceptionof two. Robert Smalls, the colored leader of South Carolina, who had been appointed Collector of the Port of Beaufort, called on the postmmaster general and said: "Mr. Wanamaker,.[ endorse Whit mire for postmaster of Newberry, as does every colored man in his section. There is not a white Republic-an in the town of Newberry nor in the county. If you can find one I will pledge you my word to resign my position the very day you find him." But still the boycott was not removed and the postmaster general failed to issue WVhitmire's commission. Kenne dy therefore came to WVashington in his behalf. He says frankly, howvever, that, judging from what the postmaster general has told him, he does not be ieve Whitmire will get the place. Coulter and Nicholas, State s and County Secretaries, visited the Y M. C. A. here on Monday, and at night each gave an elegant address to the men of the place in Grace church. The meeting was for men only- a Miss Marion Chappell, of Jenkins- r ville, an accomplished sales-lady, after twvo months recreation, is again at her wonted place with Messrs. Luther0 Langford & Co. Miss Florie Smith, of the "City by *a the Sea," is visiting Miss Sallie Boinest. a Mrs. F. N. Calmes, whose health is 'y not good, is spending some time with c l)er father, Major P. E. Upon arraignment Daniel pleaded guilty, and wa sentenced $5.50 I; or twenty days. A part of Messrs. Stewart & Sulli van's force on the C., N. & L. R. R. has been sent to Chester, where they have another contract for grading. Some trouble still exists in securing rights of way, and this has caused the grading force some annoyance by being com pelled to chip in here and there, with out being able to make the proper con nections. ' An incendiary fire occurred on Mr. Godfrey Harmon's place last Sunday, by which Mr. Burr Werts lost all his t household and kitchen furniture. No insurance. t The social gathering at the Young , Men's room lst Thursday night was a, real enjoyable occasion, and all seemed - highly gratified and would like a repe tition of the sanme. Rain is needed very badly in this j section of the county. The crops have B had no rain-at all since the wet spell in June, and are now not only losing in yield daily but hourly. Last week we took a ride through the s Stone Hills and the Croft plantation. Never have we seen such poor crops in this usually vigorous and well culti vated section at this season of the year as are here at present. True there is some good cotton, but good is the ex ception, not the rule. There were no standls in May, the stand not perfei~ting u,ntil the wet spell in June. Hench the plant is small in the majority'of cases; and, besides this, there is quite an amount of grass, with a hard, dry soil. The cotton erop is far belowv an average one, and the corn will also be below an average crop uniless it gets rain very soon. TUR'fE. Helena Heraling.. Miss Mary Zobel returned Monday from a prolonged and pleasant visit to the city of Charleston. The Misses Manmie and Emma Scott went up to Clinton last Monday. The occasion was a family re union with their father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Brown. Mr. B. is in his 80th year and sat at the table surrounded by twenty-eight of his chil dren and grandchildren. Nine were absent-among whom were two of his daughters, because their "olive plants" waee too tendar to ta up. It is reported here that Mr. WXanna maker has written to one of the Re pulican lights in Newberry that he will not now give Henry any position or a place to anyv one wvhose cause he may espouse. Russell, Kennedy, Chappell, and WVhitmire are still in Washington. While in this state of' suspense all the applicants can enjoy the hope and the happy anticipations of what mamy be when he or she is named as the happy recipient of this nice loaf of govern. ment bread. YV., July 19.-The jury in the trial of Ex-Alderman Mc Quade, of the New York Broadway Railroad bribery fame, to-day rendered a verdict of acquittal.
