That is about the size of it. The De La Howe Manual Labor School in Abbeville, with an endow ment of $10,000, and 1,700 acres of fine land has been a failure, and the school has been closed for several ye:rs anid the farm rented. The fifty thousand dollars applrori ated by the last Legislature to pay the Confederate pensions has been ex hausted, and the Governor has lior rowed another fifty thousand dollars to meet the demands from this source un til the session of the next Le:islature. The great educational need of South Carolina to-day is foi more and better common schools, where all the chil dren can have the advantages of a good English education. This is somethiing that will reach all the ehildren, rich and poor, and be of inurnedia'e benetit to them. If a sep.rate agricultural college is established and maintained there will have to be an increase of taxation. The money now available, even by taking away the "annex" from the South Carolina College and giving this to the separate college, will not be suffi cient to establish and maintain a sep arate agricultural college. It is very important that there should be harmony within the ranks of the Democracy in the county and State. The Republicans are always well organized, and if we get up dis sensions and discords among ourselves it would give them an opportunity to capture the camp. Remember this, for we may have the common enemy to ight this year yet. Dr. Hagood, of Georgia, said in a re cent address that the old fashioned bar becue, with its joint debate, was such an educator of the people as the world hardly ever saw. "We have lost our training school for public mlen, and skill iin wire-pulling has usurped the place of power in debate. The debaters are gone-the wire pullers and tile caui cus bosses are upon us." There are many questions of public policy and public morals which can be best settled on the hustings. Popular discussion is the remedy for "Rings" and "Bosses." It is the one thing which they fear and dread.-Ex. If Dr. Hagood could spend a few weeks in Newberry he would chiange his mind as to our having lost our - a~inir.sche4g, -- Wmou h' here by the 'rholesale for th< month and will be here for the b; of this month. Dr. "rewell and another lhysician, of lock Hill, and Dr. Gibbon, of Charlotte, were promptly brought to the wreck and attended to the wounded. The relief train from Charlotte was the first to arrive, the one from Columbia reaching the scene of wreck at 5.3 p. in. This train has gone on to Augusta with the passenagrs, but brought no mail or expreSS.
