Mr. Jack Henderson caught a Ger man carp from the Mendenhall Mill pond on Bush river last week while fishing with a hook and line, that weighed twenty-three pounds. It meas ured two feet in circumference and two feet ten inches in length. This was a pretty good size fish for our streams in this section. A dignified Judge of one of the Courts of the County makes complaint of cer tain portions of the public road near the town of Newberry. The corpus of his honor got very much in the mud at this place in the road near Mr. Spehl's shops, just outside the city, as he was coming to town one night last week. The judge says the place in question 2 was presented by the grand jury at the l last term of the Court as needing re pairs, but nothing has as yet been done J in that direction. The matter is now referred to the County Commissioners. They all gave bond for good behavior for one year, and upon payment of costs were discharged. On Monday another warrant was sworn out against Melissa Fair, and she like wise gave the boiAd and paid the costs and was discharged. The arrests have had a very good effect. Naw, iento Wright & Coppock's; couldn't resist. tf The Concert. -The concert on last Thursday night, for the benefit of the Newberry Cornet Band, wa a very nice affair and well attended. About $50 was realized clear of expenses. In last December the band bought a set of new instruments, at a cost of $500, to be paid for on the installment plan, $38 monthly. They3 have paid 822 leaving S280 yet to be paid. They expect to give another con eert on the 31st inst. to help raise this money, when they are to have the Charlotte string band. A CONTEST FOR A PRIZE.-Juno, venus and Minerva had a contest for he prize of beauty, and the critic Paris warded the prize to Venus. So perfect was she that Momus, god of mirth and great satirist, only complained that he made a noise in walking as she re ired from his presence. Had she lived n the present age and favored us with sitting for one of those silent, life-like ortraits, with our fine scenery for a ack-ground, and unique accessories br relief, it would have saved her the atire of even the mirthful Monms, as he picture would have been an im >rovement on the original, without the ioise. A The State Convention of the Young den's Christian Association meets this rear in Florence, March 27-30. An incident which occurred during he trial of the two negro women and wo negro men for the. murder of the eaf mute, Jake Burt, occasioned some ~musement at the time. A juror who vas called and presented to the prison rs, when asken if he had any prejudice gainst them, replied "No," and in an wer to the question as to whether he ad expressed an opinion which would lisqualify him from sitting on the case, gain replied "No," that he had only nade a little remark. He was asked vhat the remark was, and stated that e had only said "the whole damn ~rowd ought to be hung." The greatest sale of horses ever held in Newberry CountLy will take place at Pool's stables on Saturday next, March M. On this occasion McCafferty & Bros., the famous Texas horsemen, who have sold several thousand head of fine horses in South Carolina within the past year' will sell at auction, to the highest bidders, for cash, one car load of fine horses and mares. The sale will positively take place on the date named, rain or shine, and the entire lot will be sold without limit or reserve. These horses are not the ordinary Texas "ponies," but are of good size, averaging tour and five years old, and sired by blooded Kentucky trotting stallions, out of good Texas mares. Our farmers are all busily engaged now putting down fertilizers. The sweet fragrance of blooming flowers reminds us of the coming spring. Rev. C. A. Marks, of Prosperity, was visiting amongst his members in this community last week. The cold wave struck this community the early part of last week, and ice was in abundance. Some of our fruit proph ets say that the recent cold snap has in jured the fruit crop considerably. It seems that Easter comes a little early this year, only about. ten days off yet. To-morrow one week is said to be a good time to plant watermelons (Good Friday). Our farmers should not forget the day and try their luck. Mr. Charley Ringer and wife, of near Pomaria, spent Saturday night and Sunday with relatives in this commu nity. A lightning rod agent canvassed this community last week, and we learn he attached a lightning protector to sever al dwellings. Mr. Eddie S. Werts and Mr. John A. Werts, of Saluda, were visiting relatives and friends in this community last week. Some of our farmers have commenced planting corn. We learn that Mr. Jacob B. Bedenbaugh, of the St. Pauls' com munity has already planted a big por tion of his corn crop. Plant corn, sow wheat and oats, plant peas and raise your own meat, then you can say I live at home and board at the same place. Oh! that all of our farmers could say this. Practice the above advice, mixed with plenty of economy and you will succeed. The Herald and News reaches us every Thursday, and we assure the kind Editors that it is highly apprecia ted. We esteem The Herald and News as one amongst the best county news papers published. Mr. J. S. Werts has been elected over seer on the public road leading from Mr. Henry Kibler's residence out to the Columbia road. Mr. Drayton B. Cook served as overseer on the above named road last year. The Excelsior school has been closed for a short while, as the teacher, Mrs. W. S. Birge, has been on a brief vis it to relatives at Greenville. Last Sunday night we had the pleas ure of listening to an able address de livered to the Prosperity Y. M. C. A. in Grace (Lutheran) church by Rev. J. L. Stokes, of Newberry, from the subject "Safety."1 Rev. Stokes is an able speaker and his discourse was in deed very interesting. Reports tell us that our chum still continues courting. There is a creek running between his place of abode and his girl's residence and reports say that a short time ago as he was on his way to see his girl and coming to this creek found it swollen to such a depth that it was impossible to cross, by waiting until the wee late hours of the night. So our chum sat there on his horse grieving over the sad occur rence until he was reminded of the por tion of scripture that reads thus: "Oh! that I had the wings of a dove", and added to this, saying," then would I fly over this high water and see my girl, but the condition I'm now placed in, I will have to return back home." So our chum returned back home and toiled away another long six days work and pursued his journey again, being this time successful in his undertaking, and we learn since, that our chum is now as happy as a June bug in the hot month of August.
