The following circular was printed
and (istribited Dy Mr. Walter C. Bobert
son of this city on Monday afternoon the
250h Instant :
Columbia, S. 0., Oct. 22nd, 1880.
Mr. N. G. Gonzales-Siit : I have been
informed, by Mr. Reamer, that yesterday
evenhig, in Ils presence, you mado use
of some most highly insulting language
in referonce to ilt ; I write to demand a
retraction of sah' language.
W . C.ltm 'OET soN.
October 22nd, 1880.
Mr. W. C. Robertson, Present : Sit
I decline. N. G. GONZALES.
October 22nd, 1886.
YIr. N. G. Gonzales : Sli-As you
have refused to retract the offensive lan
guage used by yourself in reference to
me, I now request that you accord met a
meeting, at such a time and place as
may be mutually agreed upon, to render
satisfactioi for such language. I am
aware that you are under a peace bond,
and ailn willir that you should fix the
time to suit the requirements of your
bund. W ALTER C. 1tO13EiT'iSON.
October 23rd, 1886.
Mr. W. C. Robertson : Sil--As I
stated in my first interview with your
representative, that I could not ac
cept a challenge to a duel, and as
from your note it appears that you
contemplite the adjournment of a hos
tile meeting until nextFebruary, when
my peace bond will expire, I cannot re
gard y our challenge as seriously intend
edl. I need only reiterate what I said
to your brother when he called upon ime
--that while I cannot take the Initiative
in hostiles, I hold myself responsible for
all my declarations, and that if you feel
s1illeient ly aggrieved to accept the risk
of an assault u'on me, I can be readily
found at my place of business, or about
the city. There is nothing in my bond
to prevent ie from defending myself,
and you may feel quite easy on that
score. I venture to suggest, that if you
propose any action which could lead to
an encounter, I shall be in dluc time ad
vised of yo i determination.
N. G. GONzArEs.
Octobe:- 23rd, 1880.
Mr. N. G. Gonzales: DEARSIl--Wit.h
out dliscussing the seriousness of my in
tentions, will you be kind enough to ap
point a day on whichi we can meet. with
friends, either in Charlotte or Augusta
to arrange for a hostile meeting kinder
the provisions of the code dncllo, if this
does not violate your peace bond, which
seems your sole objection, and if it vio
lates your bond, I will gladly wait until
February. WA LTER C. Rou ER'TSON.
October 24th, 1886.
Mr. W. C. Robertson Suit-I cannot
regard a challenge as seriously designed
to induce a duel when it is presented
with a full knowledge of the fact that
the challenged party will not accept it.
The reiteration of your challenge under
such circumstances as I have indicated
above, and your failure to respond to
my suggestion that you take a short and
easy method of securing satisfaction,
cain only be accepted as indicating a
(e(ire to place me in at position whlich I
(10 not propose to occupy. Duelling is
letad iii South Carolina.
.lieyonl the fact that I am under a
peac", bond and cannot, make a hostile
demonstration, is the objection which I
have to subject ing myself, at your re
quest, to the peraltics of felony, when
the satisfatction you desire can be more
readily, surely and legally afforded you
in atother way. My peace bond does
not p)revent you from attacking me,
after notice, nor does it debar me from
shooting yout if you make the attack. This
is the only reply 1 have to make. Per
iaps I had better add, that if I hear that
my refusal to accept your challenge is
made, by yourself, your friends or asso
ciates, the basis for an1y inlpia'ltion tn
mIy coulrage, I shall be comipellcd, re
luctant ly, hut in justice to myself, to
pl))ishi Ihmis corrcspondecnce.
